Spyderco Delica 4 FFG factory edge

I forgot to mention, on one side near the base of the blade there is a brownish colored spot and a burn on the edge of the new delica, I suspect they burned the edge, I should probably resharpen it, but.. I'm scared.

My gray Delica came with somewhere between 14 and 15 dps. Stupid sharp and I whittled cedar with it for days before I felt the need to touch it up. Instead of pulling out the Wicked Edge and all that, I just touched up at 20 dps on the Sharpmaker through my ultrafines and a few passes over my strop. So much quicker and it's now nice and sticky at the edge just like I like. The microbevel is so tiny you can barely see it. Should be a long time before I need to reprofile. You'll really like the knife. Feels great in hand, and for an even better feel take the clip off.

I say use it till it dulls. I'm sure it came really sharp like most all Spydercos. That knife was meant to be a worker. Spyderco has the best factory edge bar none IMO and I like to let it go as long as I can before resharpening. I've been experimenting over the past few sharpenings how to recreate their edge on a Wicked Edge, but then I touch up on the Sharpmaker and realize how quick and effortlessly I just made it so sharp.

Even if the edge on mine has a burned spot I would agree they have the best factory edge for sure.

I thank everyone who replied in this thread, I didn't think I'd get so many responses. Even from the man himself, Sal Glesser, how cool is that!.

They're always less than 40 degrees inclusive, but not always as low as 30 degrees inclusive. But as long as it's below 40 degrees inclusive, touching up the edge on the 40 degree setting on the Sharpmaker is a breeze.

So many other companies go way over 40 degrees inclusive, which is just ridiculous in my opinion.

I found this older thread on Blade Forums, regarding edge angles. I found it pretty interesting to read. This thread also, from over at the Spyderco Forums.

I went and pulled the trigger, I ordered the Delica 4 C11FPGY (Gray).

The gray is a good color. It is non-tactical looking, yet not loud. It blends with jeans or suits. Good choice.

I have with me a grey and a purple (my wife gave it to me). The purple is nice, also, as it is not bright, sort of subdued.

My D4 FFG has the brown handle scales. Lately, I've been EDCing it a lot. At first, I thought the D4's FFG blade felt 'fragile', but as long as I'm using it for what a knife is for (cutting), it's an outstanding knife. I like the brown scales, but I want a D4 FFG with the basic black scales, too. For some reason, FRN colors other than black look a bit odd to me. I like the fact that the brown is subdued, though. I bought it back before the D4 FFG was offered in basic black.

The Spyderco Delica 4 will be my first lockback knife, and first color scaled folding knife (Victorinox SAK's are the exception) other than black. I do have two other Spyderco's which I love as well, the Tenacious and Persistence. Here's a picture I took yesterday night...

Hey James Y,
I think the brown FRN scales look good on the knife, I'd be happy if my Delica 4 was in that color. As for the black scales...they look good on every knife, but there needs to be some variety. :)

I have the brown Delica 4. I like the color and a bronze anoed Ti Deep Carry clip from Casey aka theoriginalspaceman goes with it very well. It gets a lot of pocket time, more than I ever thought it would when I first got it. the VG 10 takes a great edge and sharpens very easily. I don't think you can go wrong with the Delica.

Thanks Lycosa, the BK14's coating is starting to show some wear now, but it's holding up very well.

Wouldn't mind having a gray one, but I'm enjoying the blue right now!
