Spyderco Delica new handle

I´m not a knife maker by any means, but I wanted to make some new handles for my Delica and now I´ve finally found the time to make some prototypes.

It is just quickly ground out of some stainless steel for checking the ergonomics and to see if my design works out.
I´ve managed to get a second choil for more delicate works without loosing my "normal" girp on the knife by reshaping the handle.
There is no longer a gap between the handle and the blade and the handle is about 8mm shorter.
Sorry for the bad picture quality..

Again this is just a prototype.
I plan to make the real handles either out of titanium or a thin stainless steel plate with a layer of textured g10.

Looks like a larger Dragonfly. Nice work!

On a sidenote; with all these people recently calling for choils on the Delica and now many people making replacement handles with that feature, I think Spyderco really needs to get the Caly production ramped up again and get more of those out!

I liked it a lot. I'm trying to do something similar to the new GB2. Love the steel; not so happy with the scale design.

Thanks guys for all the kind words!
The dragonfly was indeed an inspiration to me.
I think it is by far one of the most sophisticated knife designs out there. It manages to give you a full four finger grip on a tiny handle with great ergonomics and has a great design where every curve of the blade/handle smoothly "flows" in the next one.
Unfortunately right now the project is a little on hold as I cant find any shop that sells either g10 in a decent thickness or titanium.. :/
But I´ll keep you posted!

Great work - you can call it the "Anax", for anax walshinghami, one of the largest dragonfly species. I commented to someone last week about how much cutting ability the little Dragonfly blade has. Having a handle like that on a Delica makes sense, if the Native is not the right fit ergonomically for someone.

Thank you Joe. Looks pretty cool to me. Hey op, are you going to round the tang any to make it follow the curve of the choil cutout in the handle?

I like it! Personally I like the idea of a dragonfly/delica crossbreed more than a delica/pm2 cross (which is what people seem to clamor for). If it looks like this I'd favor it over the Caly as well. I wonder if there's any Dragonfly XL in the works at all...

I like it. I've always wished the handle length relative to the length of the blade was a bit shorter and your design answers that.

Thanks guys!
Today I finally got the G10.
Unfortunately it is too thick, so i have to mill it down a bit.
I´ll post pictures when I´ve got something new!
