Spyderco Delica vs. Sage vs. Tenacious

I am in the same boat. I have a Cat and a Chicago on order, with the idea of making one of them my regular EDC knife. I may return the other depending on how much I like it.

The name and associations with "Chicago" are enough to keep me from buying one of those... the progressive restrictions, controls, and mindset spawned from that city are abhorrent to me. Let's pray they don't spread any more than they already have. Urggggggggghhhhhh!!!! Probably a very nice knife, but just the name of that city pushes some bad buttons for me. (Sorry for the mini rant.. just had to express it!)

The Cat looks like it could be a great EDC. Or the Dragonfly... it's kind of between those two for me. Guess I need to look at the Caly as well.

do i need a knife the size of the sage? no, but man is it nice. I recently started looking at the chicago and the dragonfly myself as my travel blade, something smaller that i can carry and not have to worry about it being legal. the cat is too big to be legal everywhere so i had to knock my choice down to the chicago. Personally i chose the dragonfly because of the blade shape and g-10 handle.

If you find the Sage is only a touch to much, you may like the Caly3. It's just slightly smaller in every dimension except the cutting edge is almost identical.

Unfortunately, the Caly at 3 oz. is still a little more weight than I'd prefer.

I'd really like to get the weight down as well... the Dragonfly lightweight with 2.3" flat ground VG-10 blade and 1.2 oz. of weight sounds amazing for EDC. Even the G-10 model is only 2 oz.

And the Cat Carbon Fiber is 2.4 oz. and about 2 1/2" flat ground blade.

These two are really lookin' good to me.

Agree. The Sage is a wonderful knife to have and I love it. Just don't see it for EDC for myself.

And I can see the wisdom in having a knife like the Chicago for travel. That does make sense if you expect to spend time in various cities with a knife.

The following all look like great choices to me:

Model........Handle.. Blade... Edge... Wt....... Closed.. Open.. Steel.. Origin
==============================================
Dragonfly... FRN..... 2.3"..... 1.9".... 1.2 oz.. 3.2"...... 5.4"... VG-10.. Japan
Dragonfly... G-10.... 2.3"..... 1.9".... 2.0 oz.. 3.2"...... 5.5"... VG-10.. Japan
Cat........... CF........ 2.4"..... 2.1".... 2.4 oz.. 3.6"...... 5.9"... S30V.. Taiwan
Chicago..... CF........ 2"........ 1.8".... 1.9 oz.. 3.1"...... 5"...... S30V.. Taiwan

Doesn't this belong in the Spyderco sub forum?
The discussion is specific to one manufacturer.

i would personally pick the sage. the tenacious is pretty darn big so you may consider the persistence instead. i wouldnt go with the delica personally because i don't like lockbacks. the sage has cf as opposed to the g10 on the tenacious. it also has s30v instead of the 8cr13mov. so if money isn't an issue i'd go sage, but i dont think youll be disappointed in any of them

The Persistence, indeed, is a wonderful low cost choice. In many ways a fairly close stand-in for the Sage 1 at less than half the price.

Sage in itself is a different class of Spyderco vs the other two you posted.

In order of quality and price...Tenacious, Delica, and Sage.

All are great knives, I do own and use them all. Sage would be my favorite, but I do prefer the premiums of Fit and Finish, Carbon Fiber scales, and of course a FFG s30v blade!

Each of these knives live up to their name and price point.

If you could afford the Sage I would just go for that. It's light and carries very nice with a low riding wire clip that makes it invisible in the pocket. Plus the ergos are the best of the 3 imo.

I agree... if the $80 is within your budget, the Sage 1 is a very, very satisfying knife. If the budget is much tighter... spend $30 for a Persistence and it's similarly satisfying in it's own low cost way.

No doubt the Sage's S30V steel is better than the Tenacious' 8cr13mov steel, but how much the difference would manifest itself in my real-world usage, and whether that difference is worth the twice the price for the knife, I'm really not able to say as yet. Perhaps others can speak to the real world differences to the average user in these steels. But let's just day that I'm a lot more comfortable pressing my $39 Tenacious into dirty duty than I am my "elite" $80 Sage. Maybe I'll get over that in time. ;)

Eh, tenacious' steel gets a bad rap, it's really not bad steel. The reason it seems that way is because MOST modern spydies have come with so called "super steels", and this drops just below those.

for 99% of people it's more than enough steel. For me at work, it's my go to spydie. Wearing gloves all day at work it's heft and thickness make it great, easy to feel out. And it's easy to open/close while gloved. The steel stands up to hard use, doesn't have near the edge retention of my s30v, or even vg10 spydies, but it's definitely usable.

And, like you said, being cheap and built well, it's so much easier to get down and dirty, using it in places many wouldn't dream of bringing their "higher quality" knives.

Sage 2 is one of the best production knives being made today. It's got so many things going for it that I don't feel like doing all that typing to give you a luandry list of things. If you know folding knives and you handle a Sage2 you will see what I'm talking about.

The Sage 1 is incredible also but I love Ti framelocks.

@SteelSnob I just bought a Sage 2, so could you maybe put a list of the things you like about it, just to "reassure" me, and for the benefit of the OP, if they are interested in the Sage 2?

Also do you EDC it, or does it sit in a safe/your collection, as I plan on EDC'ing mine, so was just curious
