I acquired a new toy recently. Several weeks ago I received and uncrated a 50W JPT MOPA split fiber laser from China. My intention is to incorporate the laser capabilities for engraving and marking with my current CNC scales embellishing endeavors. What has actually taken place is that learning this laser and all the settings for materials has been way more involved than I anticipated. It hasn’t been all smiles and the time devoted to this new laser has taken the equivalent amount of time away from the CNC machining side of things.
So I started out with something I thought would be easy to learn… blade marking. Turns out ‘easy’ is a relative term and as time went by I became frustrated with my progress. Testing is the only way to improve knowledge and skill levels but having the material to do all that testing on is problematic. At some point you just have to commit and mark the actual item. That’s what happened with the knife shown below. I took a swing at marking my Endela/Military blade hoping I had all things worked out for a nice outcome.
The result is not perfect… but for a first laser embellished blade it does look nice even though marking just the obverse side of the blade may not be everyone’s cup of tea. I'm discounting the price of the knife for that reason.
Spyderco Endela/Military PROMOD knife… 1X1 black/blue layered G10 full contour scales with charcoal G10 back spacer… stock black coated spoon pocket clip… VG10 FFG blade… $135.00 with free shipping to a US mailing address… PayPal only.
