When used cutting hard, the tang will press the lock. Depending on the tolerance, the force might cause the lock dipping deeper into the tang notch.
This is why some people say they feel it when cutting or pressing hard against the edge.
A good lockback should not budge when the pressure is against the spine, as in spine whack, for safety reason. The dipping deeper as in during heavy cutting has no safety impact at all. If any, the lock simply engage deeper .
This dipping is what Demko resolved with his Tri-ad design. Look at the diagram, and draw the force against the component like taught in physic class analyzing torque, you'll see why.

You mentioned for safety reason it is build that way, but I fail to imagine the scenario. Can you elaborate?
i'll add my thoughts for the op.....blade play is so subjective it's almost impossible to discuss it realistically. what one considers massive blade play in any direction, another doesn't see any...and everything in between.
my enduras do have blade play, except one i haven't really used at all.....but not enough to affect use.
