Spyderco Endura vs. BM Ascent?

Regarding the CS Voyager series, the large tanto version is very strong and can carry fairly easily, but I still prefer the Spyderco. Actually, I own 2 Enduras, 2 Voyagers (1 clip point, 1 tanto), and an 830 Ascent (Eclipse).
The lock on my Ascent is not very sturdy. The lock bar inside the knife is very thin and rounded...not strong at all. On the other hand, the Spydercos and the Cold Steel folders have basically the same lockback mechanism (same Japanese manufacturer), which is rock solid.

Truthfully, I like Benchmade knives a lot, too, but I'm not overly big on the Ascent series.

Mickey and David, i mean no disrespect here, but this guy is looking for a good working knife, so personal preferences or looks don't matter as much as what the knife can do.

I don't know if you're still interested, but this topic was covered in detail a few months ago, so check this out if you're still researching: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum32/HTML/000738.html

Personally, I like both knives but I prefer the Ascent 830 over the Endura. If you can't follow that link to the Ascent vs. Endura topic try using the search feature and you should find it. Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to get!

James Mattis - Thanks for the tip! You correctly diagnosed my problem; the Ascent wasn't closing properly because the backspring slid forward. I just used a screwdriver to push it back a little and it seems fine now.

Hmm, I haven't gotten it yet. I'm still saving up some extra cash. Hopefully will get it within a couple weeks (by the end of this month). Thanks, Troy for offering the free neck sheath, but I don't have a car so I can't drive to Bloomington (being fifteen sucks). They charging $16.25 for the neck sheath.

Well, let me start off by saying I won't be buying another Spyderco any time soon...that said I would by the Endura. The only problem I have had with the Endura has been the tip, I have had 5 and have broken ALL of the tips off. Granted, I do abuse my knives and occassionally use them for things other than their intended purpose...but come on 5 broken tips!!!! However, in the ergonomics and quality department, it hands down beats the the Ascent.

Now as far as Endura vs. Voyager goes, I say Voyager. Now, let me say I will probably never by another Zytel handled knife, and I hate the integral clip on the Voyager. In fact, the clip has been the only problem with my Voyager Tanto. My clip, and 2 of my other friends clips just broke of of our Voyagers, but YMMV. However, the Voyager is a MUCH tougher knife than the Endura, IMHO, and because of the Tanto blade I have had 0 problems with tip strength. In fact, I have jamed by Voyager in just about everything and I regularly use it as a screwdriver for Phillips head and Standard screws...but hey, you get what makes you happy. This is just my opinion, and as you can see there are plenty of people that prefer Spyderco over just about everything else.

Have fun

Apples and Oranges really, but my first knife (read decent one handed folder) was a Spyderco, so go with that.

Flesh Gordon, what have you been doing with your Enduras? If you know that a knife has a thin tip, you should treat it accordingly. I think that a tanto style knife like CRKT M-16 or a BM Stryker would better for you.

Like I said, I didn't claim to use my knives "correctly" all the time. I did a lot of things with them, I threw them, I opened coffee cans with with, I used them while hunting (aka plinking) etc..., I just basically abused them. I carry a knife to use, what every that use my be. Maybe cleaning my finger nails, maybe be digging some big ass rock out of the ground. In fact, I purposely tried to destroy my first Endura, it held up well and was a great knife, except for the tip. All my other Endura's were just users and ever single one of them lost the tip. I have Tanto blades, I usually carry a modified CS XL Voyager Tanto (I took my POS Native's clip and put it on the Voyager...don't even get me started about the Native!!!!!) I like Tanto's, but not exclusively. Besides that, I am starting to carry more fixed blades, starting with a Strider WP which is basically indestructable and fits my purposes perfectly.

Again, YMMV. Find what you like and use it.

Go Endura, but if you do go with the Acsent forget the black teflon version. It made the opening and especially closing, a tiny bit would stick out the handle. Because it was so tight it would not snap shut.
Took a loss in trade but went back to Spyderco.
