I was at the Spyderco factory outlet yesterday and man what an awesome place. It's really nice to go and be able to fondle all the knives. Much better than online knife shopping.

I was at the front counter and saw some Militech-1 lubricant. The gal at the desk said that's what they use after they sharpen a customers knives at the shop.

Has anyone used this lube? Pros? Cons?

Thanks!

Not trying to sound like a dick here, but maybe the subject line of this post should be something like "Militech-1 lubricant"...?
Since that's what you seem to be inquiring about...?

I have used it for years (not exclusively), it's good stuff.

I bet the factory was cool.

I see your point. On the other hand the lubricant I'm inquiring about was seen at the subject line.

Not to be a phallus either but its knives, Not knifes. As for the lube its great stuff. There is some negative talk out there where people say there is chlorine in it and others who say its nothing but moly oil. I have used it many times and have never had any issues at all. I prefer nano oil (the original ) but militec is my second choice.

I haven't tried it, but I've read that militec will send out samples if you call or email. Not sure if that's true anymore but worth a shot if you're curious.

Really?

I believe it is little bit off the main topic, but yes, I also use Militech-1 primarily in my guns. I have few guns treated with it, there is a way to apply it, same as the Frog Lube, after this it works fine. I like it. Once applied the way they recommend it, it dries off and works as dry lubricant. You can also add some more of the liquid stuff and it'll cover the parts as thick oil film that will get drier with the time, usually takes about a month or more in the open to become some how dry.
You can mix it with pretty much any grease you want in about 14-15% Militech-1 to the 85% grease of choice, it will work fine but I think it works better as a liquid, not in a gel...
A guy from the GT forum told me that it has long known issues with attracting rust but I did not see any traces of it in my long guns, however I have no reason not to believe this guy, he is very knowledgeable on other topics so...

I have a questions to OP: Where is the store you're talking about and how they use the lubricant to sharpen the knives - on a stones ? I was under impression Spyderco uses belts for this...

Never mind the first question... I saw you are in Colorado... :D

Does that bother you?

Anyways, I use nano-oil and love it, but I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and say that if Spyderco uses Militech, it probably is good. Maybe I'm just a fanboy though

Was I being rude here??
At the time I posted that, the topic had almost 100 views and zero replies.
I thought my advice might help the OP get more replies.

I even prefaced with "not trying to sound like a dick here," so that people like you would't get their panties ruffled.
Guess it can't be avoided :P

Personally I couldn't care much less. It was an effort to be helpful to the OP. Constructive criticism. Some people have a real hard time with that I guess.
I've never been to the Spyderco Outlet and I have zero experience with this particular lubricant.
So the only input I have to offer here is advice on how to properly craft a forum topic for maximum response.

Apparently I can't spell or type. I edited my post again. I meant to type "I was at the front counter and saw some Militech-1 lubricant. The gal at the desk said that's what they use after they sharpen a customers knives at the shop."

You caught me. No but seriously, I posted that before your other response was written.

I may be just used to Youtube and people trying to be dicks all the time :)

It is true, they will, very nice people to deal with. They will supply the lubricant for free if you are LEO or Military.
After I tried the samples I got mine from ebay, it was something like $14 for a 4oz bottle.
When I think now, I did use it on the blade of my Zancudo... They claimed that if a barrel is treated it'll stay there for about 3-4k rounds, so I figured - it'll bond with the metal and will provide some lubrication with the surface you're cutting. I removed the blade, de-greased it and got some of the oil on it, after this I heat it for a little bit with my heat-gun on the low settings, let it dry and wiped it off, when I tried it on some cardboards it looks like was cutting better but it could be my imagination, I cannot say for sure.
The stuff however reminded on the blade fairly long regardless of about a month worth of cutting boxes, you can tell by the way a water droplets were staying on the blade. It is easily removable with Flitz or any of the polishing pastes.

Some people are a little gungho about overbearing specificity

I have heard almost nothing but good things about Militech-1. Only bad thing I have heard is that it is pretty pricey for not a lot of lubricant, but it isn't bad for how most of the high end lubricants are.

I sometimes wonder if people point out others mistakes because they truly want to help the other person better themselves or if they just enjoy being an ass hat.

It took me about a 1ml syringe to completely cover all parts, in and out of G22, everything metal in the gun, inside and outside the slide, barrel and so on. All you need is a 1ml syringe with a thin needle and a cheap, new brush like the one they give away for free in your dentist's office...
I still have more than half of the 4oz bottle and I cover twice my AK and my Glock, plus I used it on some blades.
