Slightly bummed that Spyderco didn’t have a folder in MagnaMax in its recent Reveal 21. I don’t exactly have a question with this thread because I am sure anyone who knows when Spyderco will release something won’t be able to say anything.

Just vented and lamenting. 😁

It felt to me like they were slower than the rest to start pumping out MagnaCut so I feel like MagnaMax will likely be the same waiting game. But I'd rather wait and see the heat treat get set right this time rather than the debacle that MagnaCut started and has now been left with.

Edit:

Wait, this is tech support...

Thank you for moving it.

Well, they did crank out Mule Team models in MagnaCut and MagnaMax pretty quickly once the steels became available, then took their time releasing folders in the corresponding steels. I'm sure they will get around to it when they feel ready.

*correction: Spyderco took a while to release folders in MagnaCut after their initial release of the Mule Team. To my knowledge they have not yet released a folder in MagnaMax.

Wasn't the MagnaMax a "prototype" blend and not the final? I vaguely remember a video saying something about the Mule Team.

I have no idea, but I'm willing to believe it if there's some evidence.
Did a quick look and found mention of two runs from Crucible, Proto-X and what became MagnaMax. So technically I guess Proto-X isn't MagnaMax. Probably more to it but can't do much at work in my down time between things.

IDK if Spyderco did more than one Mule run for Magnamax but I found this:

From Knifesteelnerds RE Magnamax

“That second heat did not provide as much information for dialing in the composition as I had hoped as they overshot the carbon target but a sizeable margin. This heat was primarily sold to Spyderco for their mule series of knives. These knives are a good representation of the steel’s properties, though the high carbon means that the corrosion resistance is lower for that prototype steel than the final versions. It’s still very good corrosion resistance, but not as good as it could have been.”

Thanks for the info here, that makes sense.

For what it's worth, my M-Max Mule is great and so far I haven't seen any corrosion issues. Not that I mind that much, I'd rather have the other properties beefed up.

When a Police 4 Lightweight in Magnamax hits the market, it will be a TAKE MY MONEY moment for rhino.

I'm living under a rock it seems. What was the Magnacut heat treat debacle?

60-62 HRC:

63-64 HRC:

I don't know what MagnaCut brings to the table that doesn't already exist and probably exist for less money when it's at the lower HRC. But at it's higher HRC it's pretty amazing while still being that jack of all trades and pretty darn good at all of them.

Not to pick on BM, just a quick easy example of years later still doing it since the start.

? Good toughness, good edge retention, and extreme stainlessness only shy of lc200n/h1-2/vanax. For me its pretty much the direct upgrade to lc200n in my saltwater knives. For instance my spydiechef and now magnacut salts which are slightly lower hrc due to stainlessness are the only blades that dont rust when in and out of salt water here in the subtropics.
