I am proud to call myself a knuckle dragger, and I've never been able to work up much enthusiasm for Spyderco. The main reason is that they all seem to have very thin blades with very thin tips.

Yes, I know knives are for cutting, not the myriad of other tasks which we use them for, even though we know we shouldn't, and don't want to admit that we do.

Are there Spydercos out there that are more suited for us self-professed knuckle draggers, with thick blades, stout tips, and some steel liners on the inside?

Gayle Bradley?

If you just want a stout tip, how about the Captain? :D

Spyderco Chinook. It is the Spyderco knife that people compare others against for toughness. If you can find a Chinook 1, get that one.

I know the Vallotton has a hybrid grind which improves tip strength I believe. Its a pretty stout knife, and a sexy one at that. Oh yeah, blade stock is 0.16" thick which is quite thick.

Just a quick note, i believe that's the Chinook 3?

Yes, that is a Chinook 3 since it is available. Didn't bother posting a Chinook 1 since they aren't easily available, but still the way to go if you had to decide between versions 1, 2 or 3.

Here is the original Chinook 1.

A saber ground Endura 4. Plenty stout all around for a knuckle dragging enthusiast.

The Valloton is an incredible knife and stout to say the least. You won't snap that tip. Might be a little dressy for a knuckle dragger though.

Steel 130- Is that Tuff in production? It's rare for me to get worked up over a Spyderco but that thing is gorgeous!

Sorry but no. I am a big Spyderco fan, and I am also a knuckledragger. The Endura is not a knife I consider rugged or tough.
The toughest Spyderco I know of (and own) is the Superleaf. Thick 4mm blade that keeps its girth almost all the way to the tip. Compression lock (the best Spyderco uses and one of the best in the business IMHO), thick steel liners. Massive pillars. Just a beast. I wish Spyderco would make a Supersuperleaf, 4" blade and all proportions the same! :D

Compared to a Manix 2:

Pillars of the Superleaf compared to the Tenacious:

Compression lock + spine, Superleaf + Tenacious:

Another option would the Valloton (very heavy strong build), but it's less comfortable in the pocket. Insanely beautiful though:

Good luck choosing!

From what I have gathered. That is currently the final design, that is set to release this year.

Without a doubt, the Lionspy. It makes even my ZT 0301 and 0550 look weak.

+1 for the Gayle Bradley. It's a tough knife made out of a tough steel and it's just the right size to be a good working knife. Not to bulky but plenty of blade. good luck breaking that one.

thanks philwar, just sold me on the superleaf. Liners arent as thick as the GB though.

Keep in mind, Spyderco is all about the cut. Prybars might be found in other avenues, but with the Vallotton, Tuff, and others it does look like they are coming around.
