Before we move this to knife laws I have a question for Sal. Are you aware of the gravity knife issues in NYC? Do you have any suggestions for avoiding the problems? (Other than tightening the pivot) Just thought I'd ask.

IMO, I don't know how you can avoid the problem when enforcement either deliberately or through ignorance, misinterprets the law. It is an important case to remind folks to know their local laws. The whole mess could have been avoided had he carried his knife as dictated by law.

Gadgetman, have you tried contacting / joining www.kniferights.org ?

Besides, as previously mentioned, just don't open carry the knife. Problem solved. (Open carry includes letting the clip be visible)

It would help if you could point to a specific case where someone carrying a Spyderco in NYC was actually charged with possession of a gravity knife Better yet if you could point to enough such cases to constitute a pattern. Are there any such cases? I'm aware of one case where a Transit Officer commented on the ease with which a knife being carried in such a way that it violated the NYC ordinance against carry a pocket knife in open view could be opened, but only wrote a ticket for the minor charge, rather than making an arrest for the considerably more serious one. Hardly the stuff of which an "issue" is made.

Hi Gadgetman,

Local laws in many places (New York, Canada, UK, Belgium, Israel, etc.) are making it more difficult to carry certain kinds of knives. Some law enforcement professionals are skilled inough to "inertia-open" just about any locking folder, which broadens the interpretation of the local law.

When I'm in New York, I ususally carry a Delica, Caly3 or a UKPK, very effective, not very provocative, difficult to "inertia-open". The 3" blade does not say "weapon" as a larger knife might.

Deacon, read the Warning thread in knife laws by Monocrom, on the last few pages, there was someone arrested for a Benchmade 910 "gravity knife:

If you don't want to be accosted by the police, then don't go out looking like someone that the police would accost. If the above interferes with your "style' or "how you role," then by implication, being accosted by the police is also part of your style, and you should accept it as being "how you role." If this is the case, then I suggest carrying a small knife that is difficult to open one handed, and that has a piivot that can be tightened, and to have a lawyer on retainer, just in case.

I have read reports of police raiding knife shops and confiscating any knife that they could flick, even if the knife had to be held by the blade to flick the handle open.

I, however, have carried a mini-manix all over NYC, and being a tourist, talked to several police officers during my visit for directions. They were all over the Grand Central Terminal area due to the steam main rupture that occured last Wednesday.

While I must admit to not having always had such wisdom, I must agree with Hlee. Being "invisible" does have its advantages, but the ego must be subdued.

I simply will not visit places like that. Stupid and/or corrupt LEO's running amok with trumped-up charges. . . I wouldn't visit the UK, either.

Sal and hlee, sometimes getting stopped is routine here. You match the description of someone who is wanted and bam, they pull you out. Also gotta deal with random bag searches in the subway and so on

Been Taking the subways everyday for 4 years to go to school. 2 years going through Grand Central and i only seen one guy get searched during morning rush hour. Wasnt even in Manhattan.

I ride off peak hours and I've seen quite a few people pulled aside. I know of guys who were minding their own business and get nabbed because of the wrong place at the wrong time
