man i just received my spyderco H1 and i am very impressed with it... alot bigger than i thought it was gonna be.. man i am always so impressed at how incredibly sharp there knives come from factory!!

does anybody know how long H1 steel will hold its edge compared to another steel??

From what I know, H1 is "work hardened" steel. So the more you use, the better it gets.

For a SE about the same as SE VG-10, in PE about the same 13C26N. This is due to the extra work hardening the serrations cause.

I think that's somewhat misleading, as I sincerely doubt regular wear and tear would work harden the steel. In fact, I'm pretty sure it requires pretty severe metal removal(like a FFG or grinding serrations onto the edge) to actually work harden the steel. I've hit mine with a buffer to a perfect mirror polish and the thing still scuffs like the blade was made of butter. Edge holding seems to be pretty average despite my mashing the blade into my paper wheels.

I agree with Noctis. "Work hardening" does not mean using it to cut. You have to pound it or bend it.

I've done side-by side cutting of manila rope with various blades. H1 holds an edge less well than Buck 420HC. But it takes a razor edge with minimal work and is pretty much corrosion proof.

Edited to add: the performance is not surprising. I measured the hardness of the H1 blade at 56.5HRC. The Buck measured 59HRC.

Some time ago I remember was tempted by Spyderco with H1 steel blade. But then I have made some research on the matter. Not too deep - just sufficient for me to decide against it. Unfortunately I do not go for a swim in the see nearly often enough to have its exceptional corrosion resistance to compensate for perceived weakness in the edge holding department. I mean perceived for it may be strong enough for all the practical purposes, but not after I have been told that it is not...

i live in maui and go in the ocean a lot! great knife for that purpose a great dive knife.... although a fix blade would be better... but its nice to have a folder in ur pocket at the beach.. as u seem to always need a knife at the beach
