Spyderco has my knife and won't return my phone calls

Unfortunately, there are people out there trying to get something for nothing. There are also counterfeit Sharpmakers on the market. The receipt would let them know you actually own the item and help them determine if it's a real Sharpmaker or a fake. A photo would also show you have it in your possession and help them decide if the chip was large enough to be considered a defect. Being able to supply those might have saved you the trouble and expense of packing it up and sending it in for evaluation, or let you know you'd been had. Since you told them you didn't have the receipt and you already know your only option is to send it in for evaluation, I fail to see the problem.

I definitely agree and I told their customer service the same thing. I understood that without a receipt they could be taken advantage of. I offered to take a photo for them. I really do see it from their point of view and their hands are tied in what they can do.

From my point of view I am sick of receiving brand new defective products. This is the 4th defective product I have received in a row (2 from Spyderco) and I am just sick of getting something NIB and having to immediately send it in for repair. Not to mention they want me to pay for shipping. It got old real quick and completely kills the excitement of purchasing anything.

It is what it is and if I wan't a replacement stone I will have to send it in on my own dime and was told they are backed up at least 3 weeks. So basically with shipping time best case scenario would be a month wait. I'm not going to do that.

I have had two sharpmakers and both have had rods with some imperfections....I guess you could call them either bumps or small chips. It bothered me a bit at first but i found them both to work flawlessly with the chips (or bumps) having no effect on my finished edges. I still use the rods and all of my knives are hair whittling sharp. We have a finite amount of time on this earth so I figure I need to choose carefully what things I should spend my time worrying about.

Maybe you should not buy on-line. The Sharpmaker is available at retail stores such as Cabelas. If you do buy on-line, you need to have the patience to play the game to save the $.

However, as others have said, a small imperfection in the Sharpmaker stones is easily a non-problem that can be lived with. Have you used the chipped stone? The stones wear out and need to be replaced anyway, so you should only need to live with the difficulty for about 5-10 years. :) They cost about $13, maybe buying a replacement would be more convenient to you than sending it in

Spyderco customer service has been great with me. I sent in my Super Blue Caly 3.5 which had developed a crack in one of the scales. They could not replace the knife since it was already out of production, but they did give me SFO credit for the list price of the knife. I though this was more than fair, though I really miss the SB Caly.
