Spyderco Hinge Pins ?

Hello,
I have always wanted to get some of the spyderco models for EDC, but when I look them up, it always looks like their blade to handle hinge pin is a pop-rivet, like some sort of cheap gas station knife (as we all know, this is the weakest part of a folding knife). After reading many reviews, I have realized many people carry them for EDC. So, I guess what Im asking is what is the hinge pin made out of, and does anyone ever fear that it will break during everyday use.

Thanks

I don't know what the pivot pins are made of but they do not break during everyday use.

Not to say it can't happen, but I don't ever remember reading of one breaking. I don't think it's any more likely with Spyderco than any other folder on the market. I've been using Spydies for more than a decade and never had a problem with the pin, or anything else, for that matter.

OK thanks guys, Ill probably just start with 1 or 2 just to see.

OK, OK, who am I kidding, probably 7 or 8. (Im such an addict)

It's not just Spyderco. Most folders have a relatively small diameter pivot pin. It's because they are big enough, larger is difficult to peen and adjust correctly, and if more strength is needed the material can be made of stainless rod instead of wire. For many years and today brass pins are used, not near as strong as the Spydercos and other stainless ones.

Of equal importance is stop pins and their mountings for liner locks. I've used Spydercos for about ten years now, most with the same size pins with no problems. If they failed occassionally, they would have been upgraded by now since warranty work would be troublesome. They work because they provide a lot of shear strength and the tensile strength is enough so it will not break before the handles do even if improperly used to pry.

Don't forget, the hinge pins that look so large are a barrel nut and threaded screw with a thread diameter not much bigger, if any, than a solid pin. Don't worry.:D regards, ss.
