What do you guys sharpen your Spyderco Hossom fixed blades on? I thought that they were flat ground but I just found out (email form Sypderco) that they are but with a convex edge. The only sharpener I’m any good with is the Sharpmaker. I have the Woodlander and the Forager.

Thanks in advance.

Check out this link on how to sharpen a convex edge. It does take some practice, but one of the great things about a convex edge is that once it is sharp, all you have to do to resharpen is strop the blade on some leather with green compound on it. The trick is to continually do this after a descent amount of work, before the knife really starts to dull.

You could use your sharpmaker but that would reprofile the edge grind to flat, as well as take some time. I think a convex edge has the advantage in edge grinds, so it is definately worth taking some time to get the hang of

Great link, the tutorial will be great for other convex edged knives, BUT...
The Forager edge looks like a very shallow 'S' when the spine is to the right, as in the tutorial photos. The rotation technique will work fine for the top part of the blade, but the bottom section of the recurve will present a special challenge, methinks...

It is the curve of the blade that has be worried the most if the way to sharpen this knife is to do so on a strop block or something similar. I thought about practicing on a cheaper knife but I just don’t have one that has that type of curve to it. Maybe if I just spend enough time practicing on a lesser knife I’ll get a feel for the process and then the curve won’t be that big of a deal. I just have no experience with convex edges.

The only convex edge knife I own is a BRKT Bravo-1 and at the same time I bought the Bravo I also purchased something called a Strop Bat (http://jreindustries.com/strops.htm). It has a handle and 4 sides with leather on each side with different compound already in the leather. I haven’t used it yet because I haven’t had the time to get the Bravo-1 into the woods yet and really put it to work.
Thanks guys for any info you can and have given me.

As always Jerry I thank you for your help, since I already own the Strop Bat do you know if the knife can be sharpen with that device once I get some practice under my belt? If you're not familiar with what I'm talking about I posted link to it.
Thanks again.
