Spyderco hype . . .

I've only been seriously collecting knives for a few months and I honestly wasn't really thrilled with Spyderco. That is, until I handled a Tenacious for the first time....now I own 5 Spydies! Four of which came from awesome forum members!
Manix2 XL
Tenacious
Black blade Tenacious
Large Lum Chinese
Grasshopper
Thouroughly impressed with Spyderco! Looking to add more to my collection!

Hey, congrats OP! Welcome to the wide and wonderful world of Spyderco! Great knives made by great people.

Warning: the Spyder-bite is highly contagious... you'd do well to quarantine your wallet and isolate your credit cards immediately!

AMEN to that, brother!

I don't really think it's hype, per se. Spyderco makes good knives. Spyderco & Benchmade are the two companies I consider buying from. Due to being a lefty, I am a huge fan of the Axis lock, and all but one of my knives has it (the only two that aren't are lefty liner locks... a mini-AFCK and a '98 pre-production Stryker). I don't do lock backs, and I don't do right-handed liner locks due to my left-handedness, so the S'co selection is really slim for me, but there is no denying that they make really good knives. The Gayle Bradley I handled on one of the pass-arounds was definitely top quality, just not for me. The Tenacious my son had for a while before he realized he didn't like it wasn't bad at all for its price range.

The Manix 2 and the XL version are on my short list with that ball bearing lock as they are one of the only Spydercos that is truly lefty-friendly (sorry, but just drilling holes to flip the pocket clip over doesn't cut it in my book). I just need to save up and wait for another sprint run in Elmax, or M4 or M390 or something. Of course they're competing against a Contego, an Adamas, a Hardtail, my Presidio in M4, my 581 Barrage in M390...

Spyderco knives are good quality, I just wish they had some designs that spoke to me a little more. Only Spydie I own any more is a Kumo.

The para 2 gave me a new found interest/curiosity in the brand. On the hunt for a couple more models.

The real problem with Spyderco that it is too easy to get hooked if you buy one of them. There is not "easy" to get of hook.

I have two by Spyderco. BushmasterUK fixed blade, and a Stretch. Great knives, and they really perform.

That said, am not in a big rush to go buy more just because of the brand name.

I know what you mean, I had to reconsider and change my order on the three Spydercos to just the Caly 3.5. I'll get the Manix 2 and Military after the holidays.

Those are neat lanyards, your work?

Thanks and yes they are my own work. I've tried all different kinds of lanyards - monkey fist, snake knot, different beads, etc. Finally decided to go with the minimalist design of paracord loop terminating with a simple but nice bead. PM me your address and I'll send you a couple of the beads.

Gotta pace yourself :D! I know how it is though. When I first got into Spydies, within about a month and a half, I had already purchased all of the SS Bugs, a PM2, a Millie, a PPT, a Vallotton, 2 Delicas, 2 Endura, and the obligatory Tenacious. I had also placed a pre-order on the Sprint Run Orange PM2. I had some explaining to do for sure :p

That's funny yet impressive. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this obsession/addiction.

:D

I have some dumb questions.

What is the history of Spyderco? Were they originally a knife manufacturer? What was their first knife and is it still made?

I only have a couple, my favorite is the discontinued automatic Citadel.

According to wikipedia:

The first product Spyderco produced was the Portable Hand in 1976, this "spider-shaped device", which gave the company its name, was a series of angles, ball joints and alligator clips that helped people such as jewelers and hobbyists work with small parts. Spyderco's Founder, Sal Glesser, and his wife Gail, converted an old bread delivery truck into a motor-home and traveled to shows. As they became more successful, they graduated from the bread truck to a truck and trailer. They settled in Golden in November 1978. Spyderco began producing knife sharpeners in 1978, and produced their first folding knife, the C01 Worker, in 1981. This knife was the first to feature a round hole in the blade designed for fast, one-handed opening, which is now the company's trademark. Additionally, the company claims that this was the first knife to feature a pocket clip on the right side of the handle.

Thanks for the great info. I didn't realize they first made knife sharpeners than moved into knives. Did they start they Spyderedge concept?
