Spyderco hype?

Everyone seems to love spydercos but so far I really don't understand it. I bought an Delica 4 that came super tight, tried to adjust it and the pivot screw broke. I tried to go through spyderco to get a replacement knife and they refused so I had to go through the retailer. And now I'm having similar problems with my new one. Am I just having really bad luck?

Everything is possible, including bad luck. Sometimes knife can come tight. Just out of curiosity I wondering how did you brake pivot screw? What kind of tool did you use?

I don't understand how a broken pivot screw at the hands of the ELU = hype.
Was it purchased from a reputable seller? Some folks love the red loctite for some reason and splash it on like it were chocolate sauce on a sundae. I've had knives like this and they clearly weren't representative of the company that produced it.
I own over 100 Spyderco knives and have never broken a pivot screw or stripped a head or tool adjusting them. I think that is a relatively good sample size. I'm still unsure of what you mean by hype.

A widely known trick for loosening a pivot screw is to heat up the screw head with either a soldering iron, hairdryer, or boiling water. This breaks the loctite and allows for easy removal.

I adjusted it, it ended up too loose, while re-tightening the head sheared right off. I was just using a standard size 8 torx, no excessive force, it just popped off.

I'm still trying to figure out how "I broke the pivot screw on my knife" = "I should get a new knife under warranty".

What did they tell you when you called for warranty service? Did you ask for an all new knife? That is likely never going to happen with a busted pivot screw, at least I've never had of it.

They said they would send a new screw but what good would that do me when I can't get the old one out because the head sheared off.

I love Spyderco that being said the delica is the one with the biggest hype. They are not smoth to open and to close the FRN Handel can feel cheap and the blade play, yea Delica is all hype. The tenacious is about 30 bucks and is one of the smothest blade to open and the Handel feel better than the FRN the Delica use.

wow i actually tried breaking my delica 4 today because i got angry at work and hate the little bladeplay it had. i'm very surprised that it did not snap at the pivot , while pulling industrial duty staples. however i did get the lock to fail by smacking the spine on a 2x4

Why wouldn't it? The knife broke under normal use.

There is a simple solution to this. Send your knife in for warranty repair. They will replace the screw. I broke a screw off on one Spyderco. And it was my fault for over tightening. Spyderco took care of the issue. And I too have handled quite a few Spyderco's.

I think year in and year out they have been one of the top companies. This has been the case for decades now. I wouldn't call that hype. Maybe some fans get over-enthusiastic, but that could be said about a number of companies. What're ya gonna do...

There are ways to remove screws thwt have sheared heads, in this day and age of mechanical wizardry, anything is possible. Aside from that, a new screw is all you need, technically, your knife is not "broken" , I think that is where there was a miscommunication.

It's not hype.
You probably torqued the screw too hard.
Spyderco is a great company that makes great knives.
