Spyderco hype?

We'll find out in a few days that it was his 12 year old nephew that posted this thread.:D

But seriously send the knife in if you can't get the screw out. Or get a power drill and one of those bits that are meant for this (I forget what they're called).

On one hand the knives are hyped, on the other hand they really are good knives. I had a few Spyderco's and no problems occurred with any of them. The only reason that I sold my Spyderco's is that the opening hole in the blade is not my preferred style.

In my experience Spyderco's customer service is top notch. i also broke one of the screw that holds the pocket clip, i send an email to spyderco informing them of my problem and they just asked me for my mailing address and they sent me the replacement screws without any hassle and they even included a 2012 product guide .... by the way i live in the Philippines and they sent it straight to my door steps. in my book that's what you call great customer service.

Everyone seems to love spydercos but so far I really don't understand it. I bought an Delica 4 that came super tight, tried to adjust it and the pivot screw broke. I tried to go through spyderco to get a replacement knife and they refused so I had to go through the retailer. And now I'm having similar problems with my new one. Am I just having really bad luck?

Spyderco is top shelf and up standing. I had an Endura that had some play when the blade was pressed down while cutting. This irritating backward click that I just couldn't get around. I sent it to Spyderco asking for a replacement, and I never do those types of things. But it is a Spyderco and I had higher than average quality expectations. Which is really pushing it on one of their low cost mass production knives. When the Endura was received I was told that the tolerances were within acceptable specs BUT I WOULD GET A REPLACEMENT BECAUSE I WAS UNSATISFIED. They even changed the colour at my request. To top it off I even forgot (honestly) to slip in their minimal postage reimbursement and I'm in western Canada. I really felt like a whinny wanker when all was said and done.

Send it back to the factory and let them repair it. If you don't have the tools or training to properly remove the broken pivot screw then you really need to let the professionals handle it.

They're hyped because they're good and they work with the knife community to produce better knives. How many companies have a mule-team to give the public a variety of steels to try out to expand everyone's steel experience? They've always had great customer service in the past with me and offered to replace the parts you broke. Not sure why the hate.

In my opinion no other knife company comes close to offering the variety and quality of Spyderco.
I think the Delica is one of the or the best value in a locking knife. It's not my favorite Spyderco though. I prefer designs with higher-end materials like the Para 2 and Gayle Bradley.
Standard lockbacks do tend to have a little bit of up and down bladeplay. Newer Spyderco designs have eliminated that. I'm talking about the Native 5 and the Sage 4. The lockback mechanism was redesigned.
If you take the time to discover what's out there in the knife world, you're most likely going to agree that Spyderco makes some awesome knives. Their heat treat is consistently good unlike some other manufacturers that tend to run their steels at a lower than ideal rockwell.

One of my favorite knives.

Its been lost twice, and found twice. As well as cut a bunch of stuff.

Yeah..................hype.

If the retailer gave him a new one for it ~~ how is he going to send it back to the factory.? Duh..* He only has 6th Post and it was most likely his first knife so he tried to screw it and he "did" just that and got him a new knife because he liked the Delica so much.*
Spydie makes some of the best knives out there ~~ bar none.!!!!! Not that my opinion matters that much ~~ but the truth hurts.** lol

OP joined just to start this thread judging by join date and areas posted.
That says it all.

I still dislike all my Spydercos; rock lock on all of them and uncomfortable handles. Fix the rock lock and make it a neutral shaped handle and I'll buy a few Delicas RIGHT now. I really like the size and blade steel but blade play while cutting a block of cheese is inexcusable.

You know Spyderco makes models other than the Delica, right?

I love Spyderco that being said the delica is the one with the biggest hype. They are not smoth to open and to close the FRN Handel can feel cheap and the blade play, yea Delica is all hype. The tenacious is about 30 bucks and is one of the smothest blade to open and the Handel feel better than the FRN the Delica use.

I totally agree!! I have a Delica and it's ok but not what it was supposed to be. Mine is not smooth and I was about to buy a tenacious at a gun show and it was smooth as butter. I would have bought a tenacious over that. The only reason I kept mine is because it's my only knife under 3" and it's dark earth like my AR.

Lock-backs in general are less "smooth" than liner or frame-locks.
Research what knife will give the features that are important to you.
Don't expect others to do the thinking for you, especially when it comes down to things which are preference.:)

Great knives. Always have been. Factory-made knives don't come much better IMO :)

seems like you had to use excessive force to break a pivot screw. I love spyderco and all my knives are solid. Of course, I dont buy the Japanees made knifes. All my Spydies (and all my other knives for that matter), are made in the good ole USA. They have all been solid, well built knives and I have no complaints. Try a American made knife like a Matix, Paramilitary II or Native 5, maybe you'll have better luck.

I don't really dig backlocks either because of the sucky action and greater difficulty closing the knife one handed. However, I still frequently my Endura anyway. After handling a Resilience (liner lock), I found it much smoother and I'm currently in the market for one of those.
