Hello BF,
I just recently bought a new Spyderco Endura 4. I felt confident that it was real, but after close inspection, i worried its a clone. Could someone help determine if my two spydercos are real or fake. In the pictures below, the knife on the left will continue to stay on the left of each picture. Thank you BladeForumers...

I'm 95% sure that they're both legit--the only thing that is throwing a curve ball at me is the jimping.
Note that the left Endura has the new style of engraving on the blade, while the right has the old style, which I believe is stamped.

Thanks for your response. I thought the exact same thing. I felt confident that the stamped blade on the right was real, but the jimping is half way ground off. I wasnt for sure if things like that would get passed quality control.

In pic 3 the bug on the right has a larger beak/nose than any of my examples I have to look at. Could be coincidence I guess.

I'm suspect about both . They both have some weird things going on. One on the left seems more legit but the Spyderco hole looks off.

I'd bet the two letter date codes on the boxes will show they were made several years apart. First letter is month, second is year. A = 1, B = 2, M = 13, and so forth.

Change to the cutout in the backspacer was made a few years back to accommodate the tip of the Matriarch when it began sharing the Endura 4 handle and Spyderco decided it was simpler to use the new one for the Endura as well than to have two versions to keep segregated.

Clips are made in batches and everything used to produce them wears and gets replaced over time, so minor variations are to be expected. Same is true for scales and they're made in gang molds, so even two knives from the same batch may show minor variance based on which cavities the scales came from.

The other changes have already been explained. Jimping on the one does look a bit wonky, but I'd faster chalk that up to it not being the "1 in whatever" that the QC inspector examined than to it being a clone.

Great info Deacon, im feeling better about them. Here is a picture below with the date codes. HO & BK, so is Aug 2015 and Feb 2011 far enough apart for such variations in the same model.

A month could be enough, depending on when that month was. Stretch that out to 4.5 years and you're definitely going to see some variance.

In the 9th picture on the left there's the usual step where the grind doesn't go all the way to the ricaso.

I don't have a clue- the one on the right has a few differences. Were the fakes that good in 2011?

Do you honestly expect knives that are held in someone's hand and sharpened on a belt grinder to be exactly the same, all the time? To me, the level of consistency the folks in Golden and in all of Spyderco's maker's shops overseas achieve is remarkable, but it's not machine like.

I'm Endura guy as well, and usually buy from Amazon. With the fakes proliferation, I studied Les Garten video and did my own check as well. From the 'teeth' around Endura flat panel and the butt end of the handle, both seems to be original. The fakes are missing those teeth around panel & one tooth at the butt end.

On the blade, if you clean the blade, the VG10 should show the orange peel texture that's unique. Old tang marking was stamped, new one lase etched, so the difference is normal.

For further info, check this and several posts back.
