Spyderco Impala Passaround - CANADA - SIGNUP

OK, The Impala is on it's way to Musky Hunter.

The last time I sent something to Canada it took less than a week, however this time I had to fill out customs forms, so who knows.

I also sent it insured, if it doesn't up the cost prohibitively I'd like you guys to insure it too.

Thanks,

It's been quite a while since DaveH sent the Impala out and we haven't heard anything about it yet. Any word?

Word is it's either disappeared or CA customs still has it. I am planning to go to the PO and file and insurance claim tomorrow.

By disappeared I mean in hasn't been delivered yet.

Thanks for the update Dave. To bad problems seem to be besetting the passarounds lately :(

Sorry guys :( i have not received it yet. I have receieved 5 knives the past 2 weeks. Every time i receive a knife i am hoping it is the Impala.

FYI,

I stopped by the PO Saturday and they won't let me file an insurance claim until I file an inquiry form.

So, I'm working on that.

I like you guys in Canada, so don't take this personally, but this is turning into a HFPIA.

Hi,

Just received a notice on the knife today. I picked it up. Cost $30 customs. i will reveiw it and post some pictures today.

I feel bad about the $30 customs, and the 2 months almost to the day it took to get there.

There shouldn't have been any charge on an evaluation knife which was not a purchase! If the charge was for taxes, duty or brokers fees, you were charged inappropriately.

On the other hand, it's nice to know it's been found.

DaveH - maybe we should do what I emailed you about for the return.

After my 1 hour of use and hadnling here are my initial review of the knife. I will take pictures later today. Does anyone have the option to post picks on their account? if do please e-mail me.

The knife is very well designed. The blade shape (kind of like sheepsfoot) is excellent. Resembles my Griptilian. The Guthook works fine.

I would like to make the spyderhole a little larger and more forward. It is harder to open compared to my other spydercos.

The knife is not as smooth as my native or any of my axis lock knives.
Opening right handed is fine. Opening left handed the blade is rubbing against the g10. Not good.

The g10 scales are really strong, they are very thick. I dont think dual steel liners are needed.

The lock is crap. It does not compare to any other knife i have. The lock opened twice with holding on with left hand. Moving my fingers very slightly disengaged the damn lock. I did not mean to open the lock. Please be careful !!! Scared me to hell. The metal lock is very thin, half the size of my Carbon Fibre Buck. I really hope this is not the same lock as in the Military. If it is i will never buy a Military. I will buy a lock back Police instead. It definatly needs major improvements. I only trust lock backs and axis locks now. !!

The fit and finish is not as nice as my other Spydercos. The top and bottom of the g10 scales are ground uneavenly. I am not sure if it is the design though. The g10 around the lanyard hole is not very nice. The right side of the hole looks uneven.

The clip is the strongest i have seen. The bad thing is that it cannot be moved. It is fixed.

The knife is sharp out of box. Not as sharp as my Delica from factory but sharp enough.

I would rate this knife 5/10. I would not recommend the knife as it is right now. It needs some major improvements. Esp. since it cost 100+.

If you feel the lock is unsafe I suggest you discontinue use. I'm serious.

Hi, how do u post pictures? i got a few. I dont have them online though. Please e-mail me for them if u guys want them.

I sent the knife to next member. DaveH, i forgot who to crossoff, so i just sent to next person after me. He should get it within 2 days.

No problem the cross off person was the last person, Fort Cosmos.

I'll ask the next person to cross them off.

Thanks

The last 2 ppl just put notes in with it, but I'm going to post mine... I'll post a final thoughts section before passing it on.

This is the 3rd one of Dave's passarounds I've been in. Just recieved the Impala w/ guthook about 10min ago, and just finished my email round.

I'm going to compare to the millie, just for easy reference for the vast majority of us. I can redo with the endura if I need to.

Size/handle: closed: about a 1/2" shorter than the millie. open: about an inch shorter overall. The handle is a bit thinner bellywise, but is about 1/2scale thicker. The G-10 is a bit rougher, and thats sweet. Also, there is a small clip-well at the bottomside of the clip(the curve).

Blade/Edge: I recieved it shaving sharp, not yet popping hairs No wire. Slightly straighter than the Wegner blades, this should lend itself to a wider range, while still keeping a good strong tip. The guthook makes nice confetti with paper though.

Lockup/Movement: Not as smooth as my millie, but it's already been given militech-1 twice and heated the 2nd. Lockup is about 1/3 of the way across, and solid. No movement in any direction.

Grip: doesn't work for me. The middle finger hits the linerlock and the grip of that rubs. As well, the hump in the middle feels odd for my hands.
I like the notches on the choil though.

Fit&Finish:
other than the top corner of the tang that sticks up when closed(mm or so), there's nothing wrong with it.
