has anyone heard any news of the spyderco jani song ? since it isnt really a balisong as the handles of a balisong split the janisong has only one handle since this is the case what would the jani song be legally classified as ?

i have heard that its a shame. i just wonder what style of knife it would be classified as because i really want a balisong style knife and the uk law doesnt allow balisongs

Definitely a balisong. Bought one here in Taipei yesterday. It clearly states it cannot be shipped to the US or returned to Spyderco HQ on a yellow card in the box!

Not sure if they're official dealers, but I read that Spyderco dealers cannot ship them stateside. That site is in Finland however and they look ready to start shipping once they come in!

I don't understand how this is different from, say, the SpyderFly balisong from Spyderco.

Was the SpyderFly treated like toxic waste or child porn as well?
I get that Spyderco is just trying to cover their ass, but c'mon, why would a retailer like BHQ not be able to offer these when they have offered all manor of balis and autos in the past....??

Spyderco got prosecuted by Customs (lawyer fees), fined, AND lost an estimated $400,000 worth of balisongs in a seizure. They're likely not looking to repeat the experience. I don't blame them.

Yes! Please post some pics :D

Will take a vid at some point, but after a few days with it, it flips almost as well as a regular balisong. Carried unlocked with the bite handle against your pocket, it can be drawn and flipped open without messing with the locking mechanism. :)

Video is private. I would love to know how this knife even works. Lol, the photos are confusing.

Whoa whoa whoa, wait wait, hold on...

That appears to be the first bolt on Spyderco factory deep carry clip and it is ILLEGAL to get into the US!?! Dafuq.:grumpy:

And designed by Michael Janich, but he cannot have one. Except when travelling abroad?

Thanks for the video jay.

Yeah, the clip is sweet! I noticed Michael Janich likes to carry inside his waistband, and a deep carry clip works well there for the best concealment.

I'm pretty sure Mr Janich has at least a few Blackhawk versions kicking around ;)

The tolerances looked ridiculous on that.

Does that "button" act like the latch on an ordinary balisong? I'm currently at a bar and wasn't able to make out any of the audio.

There's virtually no play at all. Yes, the switch physically moves a pin in and out of the top of the bite handle. It's truly a heck of a design.

I rarely carry a balisong (local law prohibits it, so I only carry one where legal), but I think I'd prefer carrying a regular balisong to the JaniSong. I prefer a waved folder or fixed blade for a self defense EDC. It's a fun knife though and very usable...but better suited to life as a user than as a flipper or defensive tool if you ask me.
