Spyderco Knives "ugly"?

I think the 'normal' Spyderco knives (FNC Delica and Endura for example) are unattractive and the plastic feels cheap. But, they work, they are lightweight and are affordable.

I think the Military and Para Military knives are attractive (or unattractive) in the way that Glocks are attractive (or unattractive). They have an industrial, no-nonsense look to them.

I hate to be all untactical and stuff, but I don't find knives with black plastic grips and blackened steel blades all that attractive. But they work.

They are ugly as sin, but they do the job better than most for much less than most. Doesn't seem to bother many people. :)

The Dodo is the best example. The first time I saw it, I was simply shaking my head in disbelieve. Handling one it all changed. I truely believe that the design team of Spyderco is required to sit in a perfectly dark room. But then again I can't say enough of the ergonomics of most of the Spyderco knives, which is what really got me sold on them. But I think the round hole is pleasing to the eye. Nice, simple symmetric.

I have to say that the majority or the spyderco knives are in my eyes hideous. But I have to say that the Moran I just put a post up about and the rest of the Moran fixed blades look really nice. I'm a traditionalist and love the look of the older designs but I have to say the Moran looks to be a breath of fresh air as opposed to the stagnant history behind a lot of blades. Not that I don't love history, but you get the idea. :) My opinion of spyderco just changed...a little...

Yeah some may be ugly but they do the job quite well so in my eyes it doesn't matter.

Whilst some Spyderco's may challange the the traditional view on what is aesthetically pleasing to the eye (should have been a politician ;) ), there are some models that are beyond doubt beautiful to behold, like the micarta Calypso family, the Howard Viele and the Delica, Endura, Police range.

Like any company, they have ugly ones and they have purty ones. The Kiwi, for example, is one purty little knife, and the Dodo is, in my opinion, well, not so attractive. ;)
They all do perform, though!

Also, their plastics don't look cheap, maybe utilitarian. Good user material. The Spyie (and most other) knock-off's plastic looks cheap.

And there are people who say the Sebenza is ugly. go figure.

To quote Miis van der Rohe, the architect, "Form should follow function." This is what Spyderco does with a vengeance. Their knives are functional to the extreme and that is part of their attaction to me. I will say that they took some "getting used to" before I bought my first one, an SS Police, but I now carry them almost to the exclusion of all others. The only other knives that I carry with any regularity are the BenchMade SwitchBack, the BenchMade Gentleman's Pocket Knife, and my Camillus CUDA MAXX 5.5".

As they say, "Ugly is as ugly does."

I thought they looked goofy at first until I played with some.Dozen or so Spydies later they don't look goofy anymore.

I used to think Spyderco knives were ugly until I bought a few. Now I just think they are better than most knives. I guess it's just a matter of perception and from which perspective one is viewing it from. :) ;)

Some Spydercos are simply beautiful (like the Howard Viele or the Bob Lum Chinese folder or the Tim Zowada).

And some Spydercos have a certain "utilitarian all-business" look to them (Police, Endura, Rescue, ect).

But there are a few that I just think look awkward if not outright ugly (Gunting!).

But they all cut like crazy!

Allen.
