spyderco like mora?

Hi everyone I'm thinking of purchasing my first sypderco but I just wondered if you could very kindly let me pick your brain first. I'm a fan of mora for my small blades and I'm hoping to replace that with a nice folder. I'm hoping to find:

- 4~5 inch blade (it could also be smaller)
- ~5/64 inch (~2mm)
- full flat grind (no secondary bevel) or scandi
- traditional tanto shape or leaf (ideally traditional tanto)

Essentially I'm in search or a companion blade for my chopper for camping + box opening.

If you know any models that fit the criteria please let me know :)

Thank you for your help everyone!

Bushcraft and Proficient come to mind. I will be getting a Proficient when my funds allow. It is not an inexpensive blade.

Whats your price range? Also, I know there are exceptions but in my opinion the best all around knives that spyderco makes fall into the 3-4 inch category.

I think you missed that kaizo (OP) mentioned that he was "hoping to replace [his Mora] with a nice folder"...

Both your recommendations are fixed blades (obviously)...

OP. Nilakka Folding Puukko 3.51" S30V is as close as you're going to get but I doubt it'll do what you want. That zero ground edge is not particularly robust. If it were me, I'd look to an Endura in VG10 and if you're insistent on zero ground, then buy the ENDURA 4 FRN ~ C10BK and sharpen the secondary bevel out.

I would strongly recommend using it with the secondary bevel first before you zero grind it, just working the edge back as you deem necessary...

Just MHO. Good luck,

Ben

No, Spyderco does not make anything like that. Not sure if anyone else does either because I can't really imagine many people wanting a folder with the parameters you mention. I''m a great fan of thin bladed slicers, but most folks looking for a folder with a 4-5" blade want something robust than 2mm blade stock and most folks who want a blade with a tanto point want it to look like a tanto rather than having a full flat, zero edge, grind.

Thank you everyone for your help :)

Sorry I should have mentioned it earlier. The parameters above is just the general ballpark that I am hoping the knife to be in. If the knife can be found easier in the 3~4 inch region like Armenate said I'm very open to that too as well as thicker blades.

I'm googling all the suggestions at the moment thanks again for your help :)

Doesn't get any better than a milítary for me.
Have a look at the nilakka, endura, and Gayle Bradley as well.
The Manix 2 and XL may be up your alley as well, too wide in my pocket though.

I think the Nilakka is going to come the closest to what you want, but you have several requirements that are very rare in production knives. Neither Scandi nor other zero grinds are common on production folders, and 2mm stick is typically only used on very small knives.

Yep, as Mr. Ketchen mentioned above, the Military or the Endura are best-in-class as far as longness, thinness, lightness, robustness, pocket-lightsaberness, and Spyderco-ness go.

Hi everyone thanks for your help again. I've checked out the models and I really like the Nilakka, PM2 and endura. I think I will go for one of those. If I'm brave enough I might reprofile them to a full flat in future. :)

Doh! you are right I did.

Looking for a good companion folder to a fixed blade for camping from Spyderco is like looking for a hammer that can drive nails. Just pick one you like and it will work. Only after you have had a couple will you really be able to narrow it down for just you. (but having to own and use the couple/many is what is fun for many!)

I agree with Ben. The Endura is the best choice for this.

BTW Ben, has the smoke gotten to you yet?

Sounds to me like you're looking for an Enzo Borka, not a Spyderco but a very nice knife nevertheless:

Ah now that is the kind of knife I'm after! I'll go and do some homework on that :)

Have fun

They also make a 3" knife called the Birk which comes in a scandi grind as well. That's my favourite folder, here's mine compared to a Spyderco Dragonfly:

& here it is next to the only scandi Spyderco makes to my knowledge:
