Hey Jim,
In all of our dealings with the metallurgists at Carpenter, they always spoke of "tweaking" or "tuning" the chemistry with small amounts (50 parts per million) of various elements that they felt improved performance. Much of their product develoment was recreating existing steels in their own formulas to compete in the boutique blade industry. When they made CTS-BD1 (at our request), they recreated Hitachi's Gingami 1 (we wanted an American steel ) and then they "tuned" it. Their edge retention was actually better in CATRA testing than the Hitachi version.
Just some thoughts to share.
