Just wondering what your thoughts are about spyderco's made in Taiwan knives. I'm sure they are great, but my knife buddies see made in Taiwan, it's instant junk. Any thoughts?

They're great fit and finish, and in no way should Taiwan be associated with China. Taiwan also makes many saxophones and other instruments- I have a selmer from the taiwan factory. My Navaja locks up great, rock solid, and the bolsters and scales are almost perfectly blended, while the backspacer looks and feels like a part of the liners, unless one looks at it very carefully. I'd say they are equal to, and may even surpass, the knives from other Spyderco factories.

Sure, my first thought is:
Don't listen to your "knife buddies".

Second:
The made in Taiwan Spyderco have excellent fit and finish along with excellent materials for a cheaper price.
The fit and finish and quality that comes out of Spyderco's Taiwan factory is amazing and just as good if not better than a lot of the USA made knives that cost twice as much.
The quality and materials for the price is mind-boggling.

I actually prefer the Taiwan Spyderco knives over most USA made knives.

Your knife buddies need to educate themselves. There is variety among Taiwan manufacturers just as there is among US manufacturers. The country doesn't produce knives, individual businesses do.

That said, Taiwan has a lot of outstanding cutlers. I just got the Spyderco Szabo. Marked Taichung, Taiwan, it is incredibly well made.

Many people think Taiwan is part of China. It is an independent nation. But the same people think Chinese knives are all trash. Even that isn't true.

Some of the best knives you can own. Spyderco sets the bar on quality with their over seas knives. Spyderco stamps the city that the Taiwan knives are made in just as they do the US made knives. It probably gives the Taiwan Spyderco makers great pride to see a company take notice in what they produce and give them credit for it.

My first thought would be to stop listening to your "knife buddies." :)

Only one I have from Taiwan is the Southard and the fit, finish and overall quality amazing.
Taiwan makes very high quality products, like HTC phones and the Iphone.

Thanks a lot guys. I've been eyeing the chokwe and the sage series for a while now. Just a little gunshy I guess. Thanks for all the great responses. Now I have something to say to my knife buddies!

It took me a long time to agree to buy foreign. I'm glad I added many fine blades over the years from different parts of the world. USA has pride written all over it. But your choices are limited.

It comes down to preference. The fit and finish is great but there are a lot of great knives made in the US. Personally I buy knives made here. If you can get a great knife at a similar price and support American workers why not?

His question was about quality of knives made in Taiwan. This thread wasn't started to spark an ideological debate so let's not go down that road please. :)

Out of the few spydercos I have had in my hands the Taiwan knives are the best. If your knife buddies can't tell quality when they see/hold it and rely solely on where it is made maybe you should look for new knife buddies.

Taichung, Taiwan has stepped up their game with F&F. My Szabo super clean finished

I love my Southard flipper. Even more so than my 3" Hinderer (Yup, I said it).
The fit and finish is better than most US made knives (Yup, I said it also).

I kinda understand where people come from in the whole idea that Taiwan stuff is "cheap" however standards they have are soooo high. They really do know how to make a great knife.

Would I love to see all Spyderco knives made in the USA? Sure, I always support keep jobs here in America. With that said, I know doing some things overseas keeps cost down.
(I'm not sure if that's the case with Spyderco or not.)

I would challenge you buddies to find a better American made knife than the Southard at it's price point.

What kind of knives do your knife buddies prefer? As soon as you hold one of the Taiwan models you will be blown away by the quality.
