Spyderco Manix 2 LW or Benchmade Griptillian for camp/hiking knife

I have a delica 4 I've been taking on hikes, and I'll also bring along a heavy fixed blade knife (Schrade SCHF9) for processing wood while camping. I love my delica but it feels a little small for camp use (making kindling, food prep). I suppose I could use the Schrade but I dont bring it on every trip, especially if weight is a concern, and would like a larger folder. I also want to try either the axis or BB lock since I like 1 handed flicking (I'm getting pretty good w/ the delica). Of the two choices, which would you pick?

Tough call, both are capable knives.

I would probably go with the Benchmade if it were me.

Flip a coin really, it's a win/win. :)

Yeah, you'll be good either way, but I'd go with the Manix2 LW. You'll save an ounce of weight and I love the BD-1 steel. Mine is the sharpest knife I own, other than my Spyderco Air.

Any concerns over the strength of the Manix LW or the smaller cutting edge vs the Grip? I think the grip has over a 1/2in more edge. I'd like to keep the knife under 4oz since the weight does add up on a hike.

I'd just wait for the new FFG G10 Manix 2s to come out. If you want something larger though, just get a Manix 2 XL. It's not really that heavy at about 5oz and it's got a nice sized blade. Great deal for what you get (US made, full flat ground blade, S30V, strong and easy to use lock, G10, and great fit & finish) considering you can find them for a bit over $100.

They are both very capable knives. In real life I only have experience with the manix 2 lw. And from what I have seen it is great. It takes a great edge and will hold it for a while. And as a side not if you are going to batton them through small twigs to make kindling remember to disengage the lock first.

I have a manix and grip both in M4 steel. It's a toss up, both are great knives and should take the abuse about the same. Thats a tuffy! I like them both the same, I don't think I could pick one over the other.

Either way you should be good to go.
Both of these see a bit of carry time at work and they are tough yet still slice very well.

You can buy the Regular Manix (G-10, S30V blade) for less than the Griptilian. The Griptilian is a good knife too, but it's not worth what Benchmade is now charging.

The CBBL on the Manix (One Spring) seems stronger than the two omega springs on the Grip. The Omega springs are the achileles heel of the Axis lock. Keep that in mind if you only take a Benchmade into the woods.

Just buy the Manix, it runs circles around the Grip anyday.

I'd take the grip, the axis lock is winner for those odd times when my right hand is busy and I need to close it left handed

Agree with manix. I understand ounces add up to pounds, but the g10 manix 2 isn't much heaver and the added strength more than makes up for the weight.

I agree with the guy who said adamas or manix xl.

But for your choices, it depends how much of a concern money is. The large griptilian will be like 40 dollars more than the manix lw now since benchmade changed pricing. The steel on the manix lw will dull noticeably quicker I think, but is still good. I don't know, but I would think the manix would be stronger. The cbbl ifs not hard to use, but the acids is very easy to use. I think too easy, as the possibility of accidentaly retracting the bar seems more likely, but it is still a good lock.

I think they're both great knives, but honestly, I feel like I'd go with the Grip, because I wouldn't mind it getting dirty and roughed up. I had had a Manix 2 (have another on the way!) and have a Grip and for a camping trip, I'd probably take the Grip. I actually tended to carry the M2 with a self-defense role in mind, as the one I had was the fully serrated model.

I picked up a orange Griptillian today. The color I think swayed my decision, I figure if I drop it on the trail it will be easier to find. I'm loving the axis lock, it's a pleasure to flick. It also feels real solid, I'm not sure what all the fuss is about the material being cheap, it feels great in hand and I don't think I'd want it any heavier. Thanks to all for your suggestions, I'm sure I'll pick up another knife in the future.

Good call going with the Grip. I took mine on a 5-day hike in the Smoky Mountains and it didn't let me down. I didn't use it too hard but it was perfect. I wasn't afraid of breaking it or it failing me. It was a user for sure so I made sure to sharpen it right before I left (which is easy because of the 154cm steel)

Yeah I think I'd rather have a softer but easier to sharpen steel rather then a harder but potentially more brittle steel. I hate chips, they are really hard to remove (perhaps impossible) on the Spyderco sharp maker. Much rather have the edge roll then chip.

Oh and I got a deal on the Grip, it was only $10 more then the Manix 2 lw.

Used a Lansky sharpener but since have received a worksharp knife sharpeners. That thing is easy and perfect at putting an edge on anything. I recommend it.
