Hey guys,

I want to make a decision between the Manix 2 (saber grind) and the Recon 1. They will not be used for edc since I already have a spyderco delica 4. The knife would most likely be in place of a tactical blade (or occasional edc). What do you guys think?

Also.. The manix 2 is 85 bucks, and the recon 1 is 65 bucks.

Manix 2
Though the Tri-Ad is probably the strongest lock,
both of them have extremely good lock strength
for the purpose you're using them for.
Cold Steel makes good AUS8, but 154cm beats it just because of composition.

Swim against the current. Recon 1.

The Manix has the superior steel. The Recon 1 has everything else beat. Choose your priorities. Consider that the OP has designated it a tactical knife.
(If the Recon 1 was made by anyone else but Cold Steel, it would get more votes.)

I have an original Manix lockback so I prefer the Recon 1 tanto which I also have. Personally, I don't like the ball bearing lock. I had a D'Allara once and while a great knife, I just couldn't warm up to the bb lock.

I have owned both knives and i prefer the manix. Think about it... the recon one is 50 bucks, and has aus8 steel, which can be found in 30 dollar knives. The manix has vg 10, and if you do your shopping right, you can find it for the price of a recon 1. the recon does have an amazing lock, but its to heavy imo and it cannot be flicked open, like the manix. That is the reason i sold my recon 1... the in handle retention is excessive so it is unsafe to try and flick the blade out. If your finger slips on the thumb stud during deployment... slice.... off goes a finger

Oh wow. Well the Recon 1 now has a fighting chance. I honestly wouldn't want to carry either of these knives every day just because of the weight. They would mainly be left around my house or in my car. The steel on the Manix 2 is better, however I feel like the Recon 1 has the more sturdy lockup...

The Manix 2 has 154CM and I need to buy it for 82 bucks because I live in Canada :(

Neither one is a bad choice and they both have strong locks, but as a "tactical" knife I think the Recon 1 is a better design due to it's longer/thicker blade.

In the Manix 2's corner, it does have better steel and is made in the USA.

No question Manix 2. It's better in pretty much every way. Better steel, better heat treat, smooth and strong BB lock, jimping all over, American made, super durable. Also, it's one of a couple of knives Spyderco offers that has a lower profit margin, so you're getting a good deal with the Manix 2. BTW, it's hollow ground, not saber ground. So it will slice well and be easy to sharpen.

You might also want to look at the Kershaw RAM.

Get both. This is a knife forum and we're all "collectors" of one degree or another. Its what you really want. It just seems out of reach right now. Get one and save your pennies and pick up the other later.

I saw your sig. Ironic huh?:D

Eh, I like the Manix just fine, and have about 3 of them plus 1 on pre-order. So I'm not dissing them. I just think that a nice, beefy Recon 1 would be a nice contrast to Brother Cord's Delica.
