Spyderco Manix 2 vs the Benchmade Griptillian

Hi everyone,

I have a benchmade griptillian currently. However, after seeing the quality of spyderco I am debating whether I should sell my grip and get a manix 2 instead. What do ya'll think? The griptillian just seems like it may be a little overpriced for the quality and the exchange of 154 cm and plasticy handles for a manix in G10 with a CPM-S30V blade seems like a no brainer. Is it?

My brother had a couple of different Manix 2s. Great knives and you really can't go wrong. If I recall, he liked the FFG better than the hollow grind.

A couple of things to note on the Manix 2.
1. While very ergonomic, it has very aggressive jimping on the metal liners all throughout the knife. Did not care for that at all.
2. The caged ball bearing lock is very solid and pretty easy to use, though not as easy as the Axis lock. The Axis you can use one finger on either side or pinch and pull. The CBB really requires that you pinch it with both fingers to unlock. Still a good lock that is simple to use just not quite as simple.

Hmmmmm. If you want to experience Spyderco than by all means go for it. I do prefer my Manix 2 to my Grip, I would have a tough time parting with my Grip though. Despite the scales on the Grip it is a very strong knife and i'm sure it can handle most anything the Manix 2 can. However, the ergos on the Manix 2 are far superior to that of the Grip. Good luck!

Edit: Just saw Benchwarmer's post: This is true, while the Manix 2 ball lock is in no way difficult to operate, it is not as quick and easy as the Axis Lock.

Maybe I should mention. I have a PM2, a Delica, and a dragonfly so it's not so much that I want to try spyderco than I want to know if it's worth giving up my grip. I may just wait and save up so I can get a manix and keep my grip. I enjoy playing with my grip but it sees little pocket time.

I like the Manix 2 much better. Great ergonomics! Great blade shape. I am able to close mine, no problem, with one hand.

I preferred the PM2 I had to the Manix 2.

Have you looked at custom scales for the Grip?

Keyman on the forums does some really cool stuff to make stock Benchmades unique.
Spetch does some good looking scales as well.

I had a BM Grip a few years back and could never warm up to the hollow plastic handle.
I sold it and bought a more expensive BM with an Axis lock.
The Manix 2 is an excellent knife, I have the XL version. But it's not a substitute for an Axis lock knife.

Manix 2 is one of my favorite knives. It is in my pocket as I type this. Had a Grip. Don't anymore. YMMV.

If you are already familiar with Spyderco why not save up a little more for an even better Manix 2. The Cruwear Manix 2 has become one of my favorite knives in all my collection. Highly recommend!

G10 Manix versus the Grip? Go with the Manix.

Now if we're talking the BD1 lightweight manix it's more of a toss-up.

You ever snap a blade or wear out the serrations on a spyderco.
I have. Had to buy new ones.

On a Benchmade.
Send it in with 35 bucks. Presto. New blade.

I'm partial to 550Grips.

I am off the party that, if it sees little pocket time, sell it. Use the funds to buy the Manix. If you don't use it, you won't miss it. If it is just to fiddle with, then a new knife will be the same, plus being "new feeling".

I have a minigrip now, and have handled the regulars and I prefer the manix's hand feel hands down. I loved the ergos on my Manix 2, and loved the knife as a whole when I swapped an S110v blade into it.

Manix 2 all the way, although.........YOU HAVE TO GET BOTH!!! :)

It really is the answer in this case. If you're collecting they both are just superb blades.

If they ever make the Griptilian with G10 handle scales, FULL steel liners, and CPM-154 I'll be in line to get one

Well, I guess I'm the odd man out here. I have had the Manix 2 G10 FFG, Manix 2 G10 saber grind, Manix 2 LW FFG, BM551 and BM550hg.

Only the BM551 remains.

Additionally, I'm in the market for another 550hg and I'm also looking for a 552 Ritter Grip.

Both are great knives I just don't tend to hold on to Spydercos.

I would save up to buy a separate one and not sell your Benchmade. While very similar they are actually two completely different creatures. I have owned a Manix 2 spyderedge, Manix 2 combo, and plain edge all in G10 along with a lightweight. For Griptilians I have owned a 550, 551, and a 555 and I can say they are all pretty different and of you don't like it they resell pretty well. Also getting G10 or micarta grips on the Benchmade completely transform it.

The Griptilian is more expensive, but feels cheaper than the Manix 2. I'd go w/ the Manix. :D I like it more than the PM2, too.
