Spyderco Manix 2 XL or???

I've been thinking about the Mega Manix as a folder for camp chores, doubling as a heavier-duty EDC. Does it beat the competition?

Preferences are:
- S30V steel (possibly D2, but I prefer S30V as I'm occasionally in tropical, wet areas.)
- Sturdy construction/lock mechanism to handle tougher jobs in the camp
- Preferably plain edge, drop point

If anyone has other suggestions for the same price (around $100-$120), feel free to post them.

Camp chores? NO way I'm using ANY folder. EDC for city, no problem, but wilderness is a fixed blade only for me.

Don't get me wrong, Manix 2 XL is an amazing blade, but not a camp knife in any way.

Yo Mama, I think you might stand alone, or at least in very small company, if you think folders are not good for wilderness and camping chores. I can't think of anybody who has a lot of experience outdoors that would intentionally go without a folder.

I think the Manix XL is a great choice. It has the right size, and is very comfortable for my fairly large hands. I love the blade geometry, and it holds a great edge. The construction is rock solid, I can't imagine someone breaking it without deliberately abusing it.

I think the Manix2 XL would be a good choice. May I suggest the Spyderco Junior or Superleaf?

I'm only speaking for myself, but I carry a few blades outdoors, but not a folder. Why would I want a weaker option compared to a stronger design most often in a more capable package? A folder can fail much quicker than a fixed blade, even just taking steel into consideration. I'm taking 1095 over s30v for this. Even in a necker design you have a solid piece of steel, which is designed for a lasting edge with hard use.

Don't get me wrong, I adore my Manix 2 XL, but I'd leave it home vs. other options.

What about the Spyderco Military? After all, Sal designed this one around the idea of what one knife would you send your son with if he was going into the military. It's got S30V steel, 4'' blade, 4mm thick, and weighs little over 4oz. I know some people will say that the tip is delicate but if you're careful I would think this could be an excellent option.

Personally, I'm kinda debating the Manix XL vs Military vs Gayle Bradley right now.......Military is looking pretty good

did you look at the ritter grip? seems like it might fit what your looking for, although I still think the manix is a better choice

No, No fake. They have changed the XL to skeleton liners and black button. There is an other thread about that on Spyderco's forum.

So did the original XL version have the transparent polymer button and solid construction liners or have they always been this way?

Not fake.

They skeletonized the liner and now that thing is super duuuper light! I love that knife!

The Manix 2 XL in S30V is one of the best knives out there for the money right now. It is very durable and well worth the money.
