Spyderco Manix LW dispatches barracuda (graphic photos)

I am sure he will ring in but he has used a lot of different steels in the Saltwater.

Im sure its been covered many times and im sure its a lot, but its a great post on s110v and salt water exposure as well as fishin......and my curiousity got piqued on all the other stainless and how they fared compared, etc.

nice. would be good to know which stainless you've tested the same on the kayak? more than the usual spyderco offerings? thanks.

Ok, here's a list of a few that I can remember. There are more but this is what my old mind can come up with offhand. I will place them in an approximate order of corrosion resistance as best I can remember. Don't take this as gospel...some of these I tested more rigorously than others.

Note- the first two in the list have been HEAVILY tested and have proven themselves to be completely rust proof. They are in a completely different category from everything else.

1. H1
2. lc200n
3. s110v
4. s90v
5. Bd1n- (resisted well but showed a bit of pitting when it did succumb)
6. cts204p
7. Bd1
8. vg10
9. 154cm
10. s30v

I have tested hap40 and m4 on the kayak just for fun. They both start to corrode pretty quickly but if memory serves m4 actually did a bit better. It should be noted that the m4 was a custom from Phil Wilson that was run very hard (around 65). I'm not good with the metallurgy stuff but I believe that would free up more chromium in the matrix and improve corrosion resistance? Either way, that knife shows corrosion resistance that seems superior to my spyderco m4 knives.

^excellent. appreciate your firsthand feedback. thank you Sir.

I**Also, today was one of those days that made me think about the upcoming Spyderco "fish hunter". ;)

Mine came in the mail today. Do you have one yet? I'm looking forward to seeing your tests That cuda stick with the Fish Hunter should be like butter. Oh, and just to let you know it did not go unnoticed, that cuda stick location is textbook. :)

Surfingringo Surfingringo , you're living the life my friend! I used to yak fish, but for largemouth, crappie and other fresh water species. You have inspired me to start looking at yaks again for my wife and I, so we can go fish like you again!

Good write up. We NEED more knives in LC200N, i hope spyderco does a lot more offerings in that steel now that the carribean is being released. It's so nice having that piece of mind that you don't need to wipe down the blade or worry about using your knife with wet hands. And of course, take your fav folders fishing.

I have used VG10 in a Stretch when fishing in the surf and have never seen any rust. I also am out there for no more than a couple of hours at a time and generally rinse the knife off in fresh water afterwards.
I have also used knives in 440c without rust. The only time I have seen rust on stainless steel was when I left a knife in S35V in a leather sheath. This produced a rust spot where the leather was in contact with the blade.

Outstanding post and pics. You are amazing!!!

Ps, I'm still using that black Aqua here in Oregon I bought from you. H1 is a must for ocean use!!!!

I think that your results might need to be verified. I should probably take a week off and take my Manix LW to do some fishing. Purely for research purposes. Think my wife would go for it?

In the name of Science how could anybody protest?

Right on dtoad. I'm glad to hear it's still getting a workout. Those knives were discontinued at the time and I remember making you promise to use it if I sold it to you! Haha.

It is too bad that the barracuda's teeth are not showing in the photo. They are most impressive!
