I am looking to buy a new folder for daily carry. I realize these knives arent exactly small but I can deal with it. What knife would be the best bang for the buck? The Spyderco Manix is obviously much cheaper and I am leaning towards that but im not sure as to weather the Manix will be durable enough for my expectations. Any suggestions?

You oughta search. This gets asked a lot. Just limit your search to Blade Discussion and be specific b/c the search can be finicky.

PT is the baby Strider, I bet you meant somethign else.

Go with the Manix, less probability of headaches down the road.

if your expectations pass the manix's capability, you dont need to be doing it with a knife. the manix is as tough as it gets... the thing is built like a tank. get the spyderco manix, hands down.

Yup, the Manix is the only true uber tough folder that can cut well, has good QC consistency and doesnt cost an arm and a leg.

I carry a Manix daily and really love it. The Strider type knives are great super heavy knives but the Manix will out slice them every time.

I guess it depends what you want to do with it.

I've never used a Strider, but I don't think there is very much at all the Manix can't handle that any other folders (Barring bali's) could. I'd go with the Manix, or if you're that concerned get yourself a stout fixed blade.

I've got a Manix, 80mm Manix (a.k.a. mini-Manix) and Strider SnG.

I vote for one of the Manix brothers - probably the mini. There is really not much difference between the Manix and mini-Manix, and the mini comes out on top in my book for having the right combo of beefiness, blade and pocketability.

cheers

The strider line0up is hands down tougher than the spydercos.
The spydercos cost less.
Due to their thinner profile they out cut the striders, but that same thinner profile makes them weaker.
I love my striders adn would choose them over a spyderco, but alot of people would take the opposite stance.
I would also reccomend the SnG rather than the pt.

Hope hat this helped.

1313, I think it would be valuable to this community if you could elaborate on the specific uses that make you second guess purchasing a Manix.

As others pointed out, Manix and Strider PT are in different class. Manix is like super heavy, PT like light or welter at best (as in boxing match).
If you'd like to have small and durable knife, PT would be a good choice. If you want big one, Manix would do well.

I have a Manix and an SMF. The SMF is the stronger, and IMO better knife. But if you want bang for the buck, the Manix wins.

The Manix is a very strong knife, I doubt you will need more than it offers. Do not be fearful that it will not be tough enough.

But if you can afford an SNG or SMF, I would recommend one over a Manix.

The PT is so small it looks like an April Fool's joke. Not because it is small per se, but because it is small and shaped like an SNG/SMF.

I say if your going to get tough and rough with the knife, go with the strider. Its more stout and tougher. I had a manix and its blade is too big for the handle, and I could tell the handle was not strong enough for the blade. I switched it for another and the same was all around, there was blade play all over.

But just for normal use i was get the manix because of the price.

There was a test on British Blades (any one have the link?), and the Manix out cut & out did the Striders. I have a Mini-Manix, and I LOVE it. It is one of my absolute favorite knives!!

Recently pulled out my SnG to cut some weedeater string. It would barely cut thru it. The Manix, being much sharper and more of a slicer, went thru it easily.

This is not to say that one is better than the other. The Strider blade is thicker and not as sharp, so it excels at being well, thicker and less sharp. It would be better than a Manix for digging a foxhole or prying open a window. But I generally want a knife to cut things and not pry them. For prying, I've ordered a Prybaby for my keyring.

Both should be in your arsenal eventually if you have the bucks to spare.

cheers

Don't confuse sharpness with geometry. The SnG can be made to be just as sharp as the Manix, the thicker primary bevel will just give it poorer cutting results

In my opinion, the good 'ol Buck 110 can stand toe-to-toe with the Manix in toughness, QC, and price.

As for the Strider vs Manix choice....

Go for the Manix!
The Manix will handle anything that you could expect from a folding knife.

Besides, look at the men behind the knives:
Sal Glesser is a great guy, a real first class kind of guy.

Mick Strider is a jerk, plain and simple.
If you doubt this to be true just do a "search" here on the forums and you'll see for yourself.

I own a strider AR (way big knife) and a Manix. I love them both but they are differant knives imho.

To me the tip is the weakness of the manix for MY use.

If you like to carry a lot of things around then you could carry the Manix, multi-tool, small pry bar etc.

I just use my AR.

That said I'm thinking of getting a Strider DB,which is a small thick fixed blade tanto. That way I'll have a true hard use pry anything knife and my manix to slice with.:)

What AllenC said...

Even about the old 110 for the most part. Manix has a pocket clip though, a better handle, better steel... But the Buck is allot cheaper & if having the clip isn't an issue, the 110 is a fine choice IMO. My one bad expereince with one notwithstanding.
