anyone know the market value of a NIB spyderco matriarch with black FRN and VG10 steel?

were the GIN1/ATS55 with grey FRN more valuable?

thanks...

I'd say $90 to $125. -Not sure on the grey ones, but I've never even seen one, so my guess is they're more rare. I think they were mostly all sent to Africa???

Grey ones were all here - special for BF. Run of 500. Probably the rarest, though don't have a full count on VG-10s produced.

ah...when a friend offered me a matriarch, I passed on the grey one, and got the one in VG10 instead. I found ATS55 to be a finicky steel, so preferred to get VG10 which I love. looking back, I think I should've gotten the grey one....but I've never been a smart spyderco collector, haha....

thanks guys.

$90-125? I always had the impression that matriarchs were more collectible than civilians since they are rarer and the civilian is still being manufactured....

To some extent, they are. After all, original street price on them was in the $50-$60 range. Only a few of the rarer versions of the Civilian routinely bring 2X the street price of a new one.

Edited to add: FWIW, here's some info Sal posted on the Spyderco Factory Forum a few years back regarding the Matriarch

Hi Pertinax. It is much debated issue at this time and we're not sure of the "best & proper" way to handle these pieces.

The Matriarch was originally produced for So Africa as an exclusive. We are concerned about selling them in the USA so we restrict them (at this time) to Law enforcement professionals (or their friends).

Spyderco doesn't promote either to the general public (only in our dealer catalog).

So it seems the model itself, rather than the grey version, was originally intended exclusively for the South African market.
