Wow, today was pretty interesting. My brother and i were driving and he was reading the "Sunday Classified". He was reading off knives (the cheap ones) labeled $39.95 on sale for $19.95 etc. I told him "all junk, If you want a knife I'll pick up a used spyderco Delica or something" for about the same price and 5x as good.

Well this afternoon I was at a "antique shop" and hidden in the back of a display case was a good looking Spyderco. Well, I looked at it and saw that it was a Spyderco Military. I could tell it was a older model, but looked like a nice solid knife. Looks in mint condition (looks to still have factory edge). I told him.
"Here, a great knife, good price". Well, I went home, and found out I just handed over a VERY expensive knife ;) Well, he's a happy clam at least.

I just bought a fully serrated 440V Millie off the exchange here, last week. It's picture is in the thread on this forum, "Military Lovers".

That edge isn't near mint. If you look at the picture of mine in the thread here you can see the serrations are worn a lot on yours. Still 16 is a steal for sure. If it was mine I'd send it back to Spyderco and get it sharpened.

jill jackson, The edge is in far better condition then the pic. It's still hair poppin sharp on the un serrated edge. Sending it back to Spyderco is a good idea, thanks. BTW, the clip is stainless steel and it look nice.

Awesome find!! I would love to have one.

Guess I gotta go "antique-ing" next weekend:D

I guess it could be different type of serrations, but compared to the two serrated Milies in my picture the teeth are a lot shorter. I've seen serrations not as "toothy" as mine but I thought all Spyderco's are pretty aggressively serrated. At any rate a trip back to the factory will have it in great shape.
I have the same type 3 screw clip on my ATS-34 Millie and the black on my 440V. The shiny clip is the most desirable from a collector point of view.

Yup, it looks used, but for 16$...:eek:

Btw, a new Military costs around 170€ here in Germany, which is like 220$ with the current dollar course..

Nice score, yes the serrations on the earlier models were more shallow!
I have a nib 440v with a 2 screw clip that looks like yours !And a later 440v with "bigger " serrations just marked MILITARY !
As far as i know the 2 screw clip is 1996 -1998. The 3 screw came in 1998. I stand to be corrected! (where are you yablonowitz?)
regards,R.Taylor

BTW i'm still looking for an ats-34 mili!

What a deal. The ones with the groves on the tang sell higher. Those serations are not worn at all.that model Military had shallow ones.

u812, Thanks for the info. Yeah, I have a few spyders (new ones) and they have agressive serrations. This one still has a factory edge (looks to have been used a few times), but not the scratches on the blade like you'd expect on a user knife. It's still razor sharp and removes hair. The G10 looks to have little wear on it. Here is a pic of the tip (my brother took about 10 pics and emailed me them).

-Now the question is- does he keep it and use it, or should he get something a little less collectible to use?

Use it.
Its not really that rare, still enough not to abuse it though.I have had and EDCed many knives that still look new after years of use.

u812, Mine always look beat up lol. Maybe that's my gauge :>)

Is the military knife as good as a benchmade, emerson etc? The lockup was very nice and the opening very smooth. There was zero blade play. I also like the blade shape (thin and usable).

But, I'm unsure of having g10 as the handle and no titanium liners. Will it give him years of service? I'm so used to the Emersons etc with the liners.

As long as he does not abuse it,cleans it every now and then and checks the tightness of the screws every year or so it will last a life time. All this I just said goes for any knife.
The Military as I have said before is just about the best production folder ever made, the Sebenza is # 1,Strider SNG SMF #2 and for #3 I would say the Military. That is saying something about the Military when you look at the price difference between it and the other 2.

There is a 440v NIB Military PE going for $255.00 on ebay!

I have a PE Military I bought years ago-LOVE IT!! Fine EDC!
