Spyderco Military EDC?

The Military "shrinks" once you carry it a short while. Not that it feels huge the first time.

I've got one in my right front pocket now with a lanyard on it, I'm sitting down at my desk typing this reply and I can't even tell it's there . . .I have to feel for it.

My CF BG-42 Mili stopped my EDC rotation.

Even tried a Caly III ZDP for a week, nice knife but the Mili came right back into my right front pocket :D

Compact....No.
On paper, you are right. However, the Military feels much smaller than it is when in your pocket. I think that is in part due to the light weight and in part due to the slim profile of the handles. In any case, the Military feels like a much smaller knife while you are carrying it.

The first time I handled the Military my eyes popped and I wondered how I was going to fit this thing in my pocket.

After noticing how the thin scales (G-10 + nested liners) made the knife disappear, I wasn't worried anymore.

The Military will "shrink" if you carry it for too long. I found myself passing over knives because they felt so small, almost toyish compared to the Military. Try handling a Ladybug or even a Mini Grip after carrying a Military for a month.

I found the military too big for me to EDC, plus I found that any of my 3" folders could handle anything I would need a knife for. I wouldn't break the law just to carry an extra inch of cutting edge. I would definately check out the Para, nice large handle and a 3" blade.

Watch yourself! The Para is still bigger than 3"; it's something like 3 and 3/32 or 5/32.

The Para-Military has everything the Military has, but goes one better with the compression lock, which I personally prefer to the liner lock.

Millie fans (and I count myself one of them) will howl with indignation but I personally believe the Para took the Millie and made it well nigh perfect.

The Millie is a big knife, no bones about it. It cannot be passed off as a regular little ol' pocket knife. The Para-Millie is far more innocuous looking but you don't sacrifice anything in terms of cutting power.

IMO! :D

According to my tape measure, the cutting edge of the PM comes in at just under 3 inches (tip to ricasso). Of course it is on a curve, so on a straight line it is probably over, but if you put a measure to it, its definitely under 3 inches.

Just be aware that some LEOs have been known to measure from blade tip to end of the handle which would make the para over 3 inches.

This makes a certain amount of sense, as otherwise my old 30 inch iaito sword would only be a four inch blade, as only that much of the end is sharp. ;)

Yes, the definition of what constitutes a knife's blade length is definitely open to interpretation... Spyderco themselves describe the blade length as 3 3/32".

I've been carrying my millie for 2 weeks now and I don't even notice it's there.
like everyone else said, it's slim and light. awesome knife!

I have 3 militarys - BG-42, D-2 and the S90. They all see time in the back pocket. I never notice they are there until I need them. Great knife - it handles anything I throw at it. I am careful to treat it like a knife, not a crowbar. The para and the stretch probably get the most pocket time behind the militarys.

The Military is the quintessential EDC knife, in my opinion. I've been carrying one in my pocket for years. It's seen everything from the shores of Lake Erie to the reefs of Key West to my daily grind and the trails of Philmont.

I wouldn't leave home without it.

That may be true, but no courtroom would ever consider the "blade length" the way it should be, which is the way you measured it.

CF BG42 in my pocket as I type -- super light, disappears in the pocket and wickedly sharp. I also appreciate how narrow it rides i.e. there is room for other stuff. Last, the handle is actually big enough to be actually useful for hard work. Now I just need the Ti integral lock model to come out :)

its a big knoff for sure. very very intimidating even in orange, but its definitely not too big. i work at a job that requires a lot of breaking down of boxes, opening of packages, and making your own lunch, and the military is excellent. ive had experience with 2 inch blades, 3 inchers, and 3.5 inchers, all of which were slightly more convenient for piercing, but none match the insane cutting ability of the military. even if you dont know if youll edc it, just buy one anyway.

The Military is the only knife that has consistantly been my edc for years, I wouldn't leave home without it. I've never had a large folder that carries so well and is so ergonomic to use (kudos Spyderco!). Sorry bout the 3" limit...maybe Delica g-10 ??

the handle size turns me off

I carried a millie for about a year but eventually decided I dont need so much knife. I never liked how it looks, especially the handle. I found myself clipping it to my shorts with a bit of disappointment, wishing it was not so long and heavy. I also hated reaching into my pocket to get keys or something because the handle was always in the way.

Yes, in jeans the knife is very easy to carry, but it will pretty much demand its own pocket because of the size and the G-10 being rough to reach around.

It is a great user knife though. The blade shape is useful for a variety of tasks. It is comfortable to hold. If you like how it looks, go for it. Appearance is the first requirement to finding your edc imo :D

heh expensive boxcutter? I have a very similar (summer) job and I just use the boxcutters to open boxes. The millie is nice as a portable kitchen knife though.

i do not own a mili, however i am strongly considerign one as my next purxhase. I have handled the military quite often at my local store. I echo the sentiments of most, i feel that the knife is nice and thin. IT carries well in the pocket, you wouldnt know you are carrying such a large knife.
