Spyderco Military Frame Lock Project

Pretty nice. One of my favorite things about the Military is the low weight, so I was curious how much the conversion added. .2 oz isn't much at all.

Excellent clip, Steve, looks like it was custom-made for that knife:D It really does finish it off nicely, sort of a "Coke-bottle" clip with those curves. I cannot wait to get it in hand.

What's the cost going to be on this one Steve? I'm sure there are a lot of folks out there that are staring at their Militarys and their piggy banks.

The knife is packed up and ready to ship. It will be leaving for your place here shortly. Because you lent me your Millie to use as the guinea pig I plan to give you a special deal on it because I feel like I almost solicited you into this and didn't expect you to want to jump into a rebuild. Because you did though I've got a special deal planned for you. We'll take that to a private talk though.

Contact me in an email or private message when the time is convenient and we'll go from there.

Another fine piece of work. STR, is it possible, in theory, to make this conversion left-handed? Despite being a Spyderco junkie, I've never invested in a Military due to the lock type and the right-handedness.

If I could it would be just cutting it close by a few mm probably.

What would have to happen is I'd have to pull the blade and regrind the contact area for the lock to angle it the opposite direction like Spyderco did it for right handers only it would take the blade down a bit more. Then I'd have to hope that after I did that that we still had enough metal between the pivot barrel and the lock's vertical cut to make the contact work correctly without cutting into the pivot hole, or getting into the washer space. Hope you follow that.

You can see on this knife how much metal is between the pivot and the short cut out of the lock vertically looking at the folder lock from the side. The lock would be longer to go left handed by however much had to be adjusted on the blade regrind. The amount of metal would be less between the pivot and the lock and if the lock gets to where it will hit the washer everytime you open the blade and then close it I'm not sure it would be a good thing.

That pivot is 7/32" which is proprietary to Spyderco. I don't know of any supplier that sells a 5/32 or 7/32 pivot diameter barrel. Wish I did because people send them to me all the time needing replacements for stripped one or lost screws. What that means is that no one sells washers with 7/32 or 5/32 holes in them either.

Is it possible. Maybe, but it could ruin a good knife trying also. I'd really hate to do that. Normally that is the kind of job I'd probably make a dummy blade for first just like that one. Try it on the dummy blank and if it works there I'd go for it on the real deal. It would cost you. Lots more work on something that risky. Boy if it worked though it would be sweet.

Very well Steve! Great job on the Millie, congratulations and thanks for sharing

Thanks again for the comments.

Much appreciated.

My new frame-lock Military arrived Friday afternoon. I couldn't agree more with everything Steve has posted here about this knife. The lock-up on the knife is incredible, you really do have to experience it in person to fully appreicate it. Regardless of lock type, I have never had a knife, large or small, that inspired more confidence than this one. Fit and finish is just flawless as well, looks like it came straight from Golden. I couldn't be happier.

Thanks. It was a sweet folder. I really want one of my own now. I'll probably wait for the CPM D2 model to come out for my own though.
