Spyderco Military G10 Handles

Hi everyone. I have a Spyderco Military with some sort of light plastic handles. They don't seem to be G10. The knife opens a little rough. I have a Civi with G10 handles and it opens so smooth.

I'd really like to make this Military open equally smooth. Do you guys know if anyone sells the G10 handles without the blade? Any ideas on how to make this knife open smoother? I've tried all different kinds of lubes and nothing helps very much.

Thanks!

Chris

Could it be carbon fiber? That's the only thing I can think of a Military has been handled with differently, from the G-10. it's certainly a long ways from plastic. Other than you having a fake Spyderco, that's about all I can think of and the issue with opening it isn't at all common with the Millie, let alone a high-end CF one.

A pic would help.

Do the handles have a "basket weave" look to them? If so, they are probably carbon fiber. If they more of a solid look to them they are G-10. (G-10 could be black, foliage green or digi-camo) As far as I know, those are the only two materials used on the Military.

Is the knife new or used? Either way, there might be some grit causing the roughness. Try blasting the knife out with something like WD-40 out of a spray can. I usually do this outside over a trash can and give it several good blasts. Hit it with the blade in a couple of positions. Fully closed, partially open and fully open. Follow this with a good scrubbing with a toothbrush under running water as hot as you can stand it. The hotter the water, the faster it will evaporate. Blast out the water with some "canned" air (like for dusting keyboards) and then a small amount of lube.

This should clear up any grit in the mechanism. If it is a brand new knife, it might need several open/close cycles to "break in"

Let us know if this helped.

Thanks for the reply. It isn't carbon. I guess it's possible that it's G10 but it doesn't seem the same as my civi. The knife came in a Spyderco box and has all the right markings on the blade. It's a black blade, says MILITARY, Spyderco CPM S30V, Golden, Colorado U.S.A. Earth.

But it sure doesn't open smoothly at all....

I bought the knife new but it is a few years old now. I stopped carrying it because I didn't like the blade drag. It drags on the liner lock. If you hold the liner lock down the blade moves free like I expect it to. I really prefer this knife but need to get it opening properly.

I've cleaned it out a bunch of times but nothing seems to help it. It's just a rough opening knife. There must be a fix for it...

Thank you

In my experience, the black coated blades take longer to break in than the plain blades. It might just need to be opened and closed a few hundred times.
(yes, I said a few hundred)

My Military needed something between 150-200 times to get to the point where it opens smoothly. And I'm the second owner and lubed it when I got it. Breaking in a Military needs some time, no matter which lubes you are using.

That's G10 bro! :)

That just happens to be an older model with the word on the blade and the different thumb ramp jimping.

Maybe there is a lot of oil and dirt on the handle. I would clean it up with a bath of warm water and dish soap and then dry it off real good, with a towel and compressed air and then oil the pivot.

:)

Lastly, it's not hard at all to disassemble and clean and then put back together. Maybe there is some dirt or something in the pivot.

Sometimes the scews that hold the pocketclip are a tiny bit too long, and when tightened to the max they touch the tang of the blade creating extra drag.
Try removing the clip and see if the blade opens smoothly then,

This is true.
Its almost for sure if the paint has been stripped.Every clip I have stripped I also had to file down the screws a touch. Also the factory could have left out a washer or one of the older washers could have torn, they were not bronze like inn the new ones.
If you can't figure it out send it in and W and R will fix it up for you.

I tried taking out the screws but it didn't help. One thing I have a question about though:

On my Civi in this pic, there is metal inside of the handles. It opens so smoothly and doesn't ever seem to need oil.

My Military doesn't have this metal lining.

This is why I thought my Military handles might not be G10. Is there something to the smoothness and the metal lining? Do any Military's have metal lining?

Your Military has a single steel liner but it is nested into the G10,the newer ones have two liners.
I am still thinking it has something to do with the washers. The old one are a thin celuloid type stuff that can tear or get buggered up.
Try this before sending it in,loosen the pivot screw enough to almost have it all the way unscrewed. This will give some room between the blade and scales.Wash with hot water and dawn while moving the blade every which way you can.If there is any grit in the pivot causing the problem this should get it out.I did my new camo Military like this and it smoothed up a lot.

I just cleaned it up with dawn and hot water. It looks better but I don't think it opens any better. I must be missing something with all of this. Those digital camo Mili's look neat. I need to find one used/cheap.
