I want to get a nice production folder. I have narrowed it down to these two. Does anyone have both? how are they for reliability? EDC practiacality? I noticed the Military does not have real liners, does this affect it at all? Thank you.

i have a bm745 and not too impressed, although a big benchmade fan. have seen several military, and love them. but don't rule out the spyderco caly3 and t-mag also very nice production knives. they are on my list. i really think you would like the spyderco better then a 745.

I carry my military ALOT and have held a DeJavoo and probably will buy the large one. Comparitivley I like the spyderco better as to me it has a better hand angle and weight. It would be very tuff for the Dejavoo to beat out the military in my eyes but I havent bought it and tried it out yet....but soon

The Military has the nicest liner lock I've ever seen, and you'll appreciate the thinness of it when you stick a knife that large in your pocket and can't feel it at all.

The blade shape is awesome and the handle is great, too.

Haven't used or handled the Dejavoo.

Sounds like the Military is the going favorite. I've always wanted one, but I have always been wary of liner locks and partial scales. I think I'll just take the plunge for the Military and take your word for it.

I think you should get a Mili, I'd get one, if only they came Delica sized, I wanna try out the liner-lock.... :(

Here's was a like-minded person.

It's a classic for a reason. Let us know how you like it in this thread when you get it.

The Millitary is a nice knife, But mine fails the "Whack test". I whack the back of the open blade against the heel of my shoe to see if the lock holds. My Millitary unlocks. I dropped it off of the kitchen counter once, with the blade lockede open. When it hit the floor, the blade unlocked. This is not acceptable in my world. You would understand, if you have ever had a knife lock fail, and got your fingers cut. As for no real liners, I saw no problems, It makes the knife fit in your pocket better.

I had a Dejavoo, great knife except for the liner lock IMHO, but my Military is the best liner lock in existence. Handle can also be used as an impact tool in a pinch. My personal preference is plain edge, but some might like serrations. Your call, but I would go with the Millie.

Here is my two cents. Although I don't own either I have picked up, handled, etc. both. IMHO The Spyderco feels a lot more solid to me. I would guess it would be quite a workhorse. Comparing the Spydie Military vs the full size Manix though may be a tougher chore.

I tried one in a passaround and the liner lock disengaged even with very light spine whacks. After I saw that, I decided I wouldn't want one. I own the large Dejavoo and it holds up to heavy spine whacks and seems secure. That being said, I think liner locks are not a good choice for large heavy duty knives. Other than that both knives are good EDC choices if length isn't a concern. The BMs opening is silky smooth and is a tiny bit more sheeple friendly because it's a little less 'tactical' looking but both will tend to get you disconcerted stares from people. I personally like the ergos better on the BM too, it fits my hand really well and isn't as narrow and boxy as the Millie. Personally, I think the BM 710 is a little more comparable to the Military and would be a better choice. If the Manix didn't take up your whole pocket (that killed it for me as an EDC choice) it would be a better choice than any of these knives as it's built very solidly, it's lock is strong and dependable, and it's got fantastic ergos and just feels great in the hand. Good luck choosing as they're all great knives and you shouldn't be disappointed.

Don't spinewack it.

Get the BG42 Carbon Fiber handled Military, you won't regret it.

My 745 wouldn't even lock out of the box. i had to strip it and grind down the catch on the blade. the spine is also very cheap looking (molded plastic) like its off of some toy. it almost make me think it should be a red class, not a blue. Oh, but yes it is a comfortable knife.

What I like about the Military is the nice, versatile flat ground blade, and also the many grip options possible with its big handle. I'd also say it does have real liners, it's just that they're set into the scales. It's pretty rugged. Also, very easy to carry. There's nothing else quite like it.

I already own a 710D2 and a Manix (my EDC). I agree that the Manix is very comfy and tough, but I think it feels just fine in the pocket! I've thought about getting a CF and BG-42 Millie (It has bigger liners too I do believe), but $200 is way out of my price range (it makes me drool every time I think of it).

i have the 740 and love it (all except the plastic backspacer that is but that is my big complaint against benchmade is they use a cheap looking plastic backspacer on many knives) i have handled the military and it is a very nice knife. so here is my comparison.

steel: both have s30v
handle: both g10 benchmade is machined and smoother while spydercos is grippier
ergonomics: this comes down to whatever fits in your hand and i love the feel of my 740 it fits in my hand perfectly
lock: both have liner locks and my 740 locks up really solid everytime
opening: both use spyderholes and while im not sure what kind of washers the military uses the 740 has phosphorus bronze washers and it is the smoothest opening knife ive ever had (and ive had several spydercos and benchmades and many others)

so what it comes down to IMO is the spyderco is probably a little tougher and has a better g10 for using while the benchmade is a little more refined (except for that backspacer) and it is really smooth.... hope this helps

Yeah the BG-42 is the cream of all the Militarys out. It also has liners on both sides.

Hi Johnny,

You should send your Military into Spyderco. Lock failure is not acceptable, ever. We'd be happy to make it right.
