My son is 21. When I said his favorite was the Starmate, I meant it as a choice between the Military and Starmate. His personal folders are the BM 710 & 705.

OK now I'm off topic.
Sorry, James Y. I guess I don't have the discipline that Brian and Dennis have.

I have both in CPM440V, but my personal favorite is the StarMate, and that by a mile. I love the way it fits my hand and the way that it looks and performs. I like the Military, but I love the StarMate.

Thanks again for the responses. I'm actually now leaning toward the Military...I keep going back and forth. Sometime this week I'll go to the shop and handle both of them and see how they feel. Decisions like these can be fun but they can also be very tough, too.

I'll tell what my ultimate choice turns out to be.

Hey, why not the WEGNER? I am often known for drifting!

Thanks for your indulgence.

I don't accumulate a lot of knives. When I ordered my Military and Starmate, I was just looking for a heavy duty user to replace a Case Sodbuster I'd been using for chores for 20 years. I was really excited to see how far folder technology had come and somewhat skeptical about spending over $100 on a folder. This forum helped me choose the Military and it was well worth the price. I've been using a serrated Military for over a year now and can't say enough about how satisfied I am. One feature I really appreciate is the handle. The extra length allows for a variety of grips depending on the cutting job. In the spring and summer I often run into new growth on trees and shrubs while mowing that I want to remove. I whip out my Military and grasp it near the heel and slash away at raspberry, multiflora rose and hardwood branches. I've "sawed" through branches up to an inch thick and more with a good firm grip in the handle's middle, even twisting the lock a bit. Choking up on the grip, I can gain enough control to use the tip to remove a splinter from my finger with that fine point. I've cut up lots of heavy cardboard and even cut the tops out of industrial size 55 gallon plastic drums to make recycling containers (hard work, by the way). The Military is a serious cutting tool. Shortly after I got the knife, I noticed that the liner had traveled pretty far across the locking ramp on the blade tang and I sent it back to Spyderco for adjustment of the eccentric pivot (all linerlocks should have this feature). Since it's return there has been no appreciable movement of the lockup position although some of my use borders on abuse. The Starmate has the eccentric pivot and would probably do all the things I do with the Military....just the wrong ergonomic fit for me. Good luck with you decision. I will be fun hear what you decide and later to hear if you're happy with your choice.

Dennis,
I would never had guessed it! Not in a thousand years. Yeah, right! LOL!

Why do people go on about the Wegner? It is plain to see the Military is the best Spyderco!

Oh contrare (sp?) Usefulness is in the eye, and in this case the hand, of the holder. Hey, that sounds pretty good! Anyway, back to the subject at hand. The Wegner just embodies all that is good about knives. The blade shape is a perfect blend of utility and defense. The handle is curved to fit my hand and becomes an extension of my hand. The overall shape of the handle and blade remind me of a woman whose curves are all in the right places. Nice rounded shapes combined in such a way as to be functional yet still be a work of art!

If I was told today that I could only have ONE knife and no more, and all my knives were laid out in front of me to choose from, I would not hesitate, not think twice, not look back, and I would pick up my MADD MAXX and go on about my buisness. Hey, I like the Wegner, but that MADD MAXX; "now thats a knife!"

I've never handled a Starmate, but I did own a Century Starfighter, so I'm assuming the two Terzuola design are fairly similar.
Given my choice I would go with the Military because the handle feels is more ergonomic.

Either way, you can't go wrong. They are both awesome!
