Spyderco military S90V?

I'm interested in the S90V. Anyone care to comment on their experience with edge retention, ease of sharpening, corrosion, etc....? Thanks.

Edge retention is exceptional. Easily twice that of S30V. Corrosion resistance should be exceptional, similar to VG-10 or 440C. I haven't actually tested this. Ease of sharpening depends on how dull you let it get. I imagine if you completely dulled the edge up you'd have a tough time putting a new edge on it. I touch it up once a week on my Lansky.

I agree with Josh K. If you don't totally lose your edge it's no worse, relatively, than maintaining an S30V but with loads more edge holding.

I really think it's one of today's best all around super steels if you maintain your edge and not lose it otherwise it becomes a super steel with some idiosyncrasy that requires a compromise on the part of the user. The only problem is you're paying for it like it's platinum.

I use my S90V Military for a work knife, said work including, but not limited to, drywall repair. S90V holds a working edge longer than anything else I have ever tried, including ZDP-189. I have yet to see any sign of rust even with no attempts to prevent it. As far as sharpening goes, it does take longer but it presents no technical challenges. I personally use diamond hones for pretty much all my sharpening, and the diamonds don't care how bad that steel thinks it is.

As I've told others, it is a great steel for hard work. It is a great steel for steel junkies to play with. For the average user, it is akin to having a Ferrari Testarosa for grocery runs. The average user will never push it hard enough to appreciate what it can do.

Hi Yablonowitz, glad to hear that it does well on drywall etc.Does your knife have a hairpopping sharpness?.Wanted to know if you have that type of an edge and if it stays that way even after some hard use?.Or is it really sharp and does a great job cutting but not having the razor sharp edge?.Hope I am making this clear.
Can the Norton stones be used for this CPM S90V steel with good results or do you really need the diamond stones only.

It will take a hair-popping edge and hold on to it through what I call light use (which most folks seem to call everyday normal use) for quite a while. I generally don't bother with keeping it that sharp, as I prefer an edge which will keep going through whatever I am doing to one that will whittle hair for five seconds of what I call normal use (and others call borderline abuse).

Are diamond hones necessary? Sal says no, and he knows way more about steel than I do. I switched to diamond hones twenty years ago, I've yet to find a steel they can't handle, and I see no reason to go back.

Hi Yablanowitz, see that you put your S90V knife to hard use.Have you twisted the blade, put lateral stress on the blade and if so does it still stay tight without any loose play?.

I do very little twisting or prying with any knife. That was something I was taught not to do when I was a Cub Scout back in the sixties, and the lesson has been reinforced by a snapped blade or three over the decades since. As for play...I'm an old-school slipjoint user. A little play doesn't bother me at all. If it did, I wouldn't even carry folders.

C36GBK

For future reference, just look up the knife on Spyderco.com (you know the name, "Military), and the model number (C36....) will be right under the search results.

Mine has none whatsoever after I adjusted the pivot. If yours has play then call customer service and they'll make it right.
