Hey guys,
About 6 months ago I got a spyderco military and I fell in love. Its been in my pocket ever since.
Everytime I take it out of my pocket I just kind of marvel at it. Its simple and it just works.
I cut alot of rough stuff like bailing twine.
I want to buy a new edc, Whats a knife is similar?
Whats the next logical step up from there?

I carry a Military sometimes, but mostly carry the Paramilitary 2.

Try it, you'll see why so many people love them. Better lock, no aluminum backspacer, more comfortable handle, and the pivot bushing system really make for a nice knife.

Preference. Some like it better, some don't. Why I don't choose my PM2 over my military regarding your points;

I don't find the lock to be better. In fact it's much harder for me to disengage unless I swing the blade back with my wrist which I dislike.

The aluminum spacer? Who cares if it's there? No flame intended, I honestly don't get that one.

The military has a better handle. The lock on the pm2 can dig into your hand plus the guard gets in the way in some grips. The military has a huge handle but I've found it to be more comfy in a variety of grips.

The pivot bushing system. I can take it or leave. I definitely don't see any advantage it provides. It makes the knife feel more "mechanical" which some may like. I don't.

But everyone's different.

Spyderco Gayle Bradley hard-use folder. He knows about cutting having won the BladeSports World Cutting Competition.

Compared to the Spyderco Military it has a shorter blade (3.438" vs. 4") and is heavier (5.5 oz. vs. 4.2 oz.). The blade steel is CPM-M4 with excellent wear resistance and toughness but it's not stainless.

I'll check out the Gayle Bradley.
I have a PM2 and I like it alot, but I don't love it like the the millie.
The big handle on the millie is great for me I've get pretty big mitts.

The Military is pretty hard to beat, in my opinion. A good lateral step from the Millie is the Benchmade 710. Very sweet knife with a similar blade length, good size handle, and excellent lock. Great knife that gives me a grin to pocket.

As much as knife options can get exotic in terms of materials and microns of fit, the Millie remains way toward the top for me. Good luck in your search.

there is no step up from the Spyderco Military, only steps sideways, and more often than not, steps backwards.

God speed

I love the Military, I have a G10 model, the Ti Model and the Cruwear on pre-order. Some don't like the Ti Military for it's weight, I love both versions. Might be a consideration, it is different without being too different. Another option would be a ZT 0550 or 0560 if you are thinking out of the Spyderco web, I don't have a 560 but I love the 550.

I hold both the Millie & PMII as my most appreciated, and most loved/valued.. Simple, strong, slim, and I love the FFG on both :) I can't even go back to carrying a 940 or 710 now.. Honestly

I would say try the PM2, you might like it as well

i carry military daily too...... it honestly does not get much better than the military. if this tells you anything i had been carrying a military for about 3 months. decided to purchase a sebenza 21. i was carrying the military again 2 weeks later.

I'd consider a Microtech Socom Elite to be a step up from the Military.

I was going to suggest that too. I think it has some similar characteristics to the military.

If a person was wanting some slight differences they could consider something like the Benchmade 810 or 581. Actually I've been carrying a Benchmade 890 Torrent this week and it has some slight similarities to the Military.

If you want to stick with a Spydie and you really like large knives, check out the Laci Szabo. It's a BIG knife. The gold line CF looks awesome, and it's got a compression lock.

having been used to a 4" blade and a 5 1/2" handle, most other folders now feel dinky and don't seem to give enough knife. to cure this new phobia for any blade shorter than 3 3/4", look for quality small folders: small sebenza, techno, maybe the forthcoming zt 770.

I think the new SOCOM clip point may be a good one too. Bit pricier though. Dollar for dollar, its extremely hard to beat the Military. I just wish Spyderco would bring it out in different steel options, and not just sprint runs. It would be great if there was a CPM-D2 or CTS-XHP version available on a permanent basis, for example. Well, we can dream can't we? :D

I'd consider a Microtech Socom Elite to be a step up from the Military.
