Hi everyone - as you'll all note, I'm a newbie and I would really appreciate some advice.

I want to buy a Spyderco Military (Black Blade/semi-serrated), but the price tag is above my budget at the moment. Is there anything on the market that comes close to the Spyderco Military or should I wait and save my money to buy the 'real' thing?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Kelvin

Wait and save would be my advice. It's stressful to wait, but it's such an amazing knife, you really just have to get one at some point.

If you can't wait, a very comparable (and much cheaper) model to play with would be the Tenacious. Same liner lock, but with a 4 way clip and a mid grade steel blade.

the military has very good ergonomics, its a great slicer, and can be used with gloves
also the tip allows fine work
i think you should get the real thing
on what do you plan to use it ? i ask because the millie is a great knife overall, but it aint a sharpened pry bar

Thank you all for your advice - jacktrades, in response to your message; I want a very sharp, ultra reliable knife for general purpose use. I want the blade to keep its edge 'forever' with such general use, but I don't intend to abuse it (I have a Gerber multi-tool for that!!) It sounds as if I should be patient and save my pennies for the 'real' thing...........

the regular s30V holds a very sharp edge for quite a long time
from what i see here, on BF, the S90V keeps an edge toward "forever" , so maybe you find one of those
i have only the S30V version, and i am satisfied with its edge holding/ease of sharpening, better than most of my other knives, but i also think it has to do with the edge geometry of the military
also the uniformed carbides in s30v steel i think help to keep an edge , somewhat microserrated

Ain't nothing like the real deal Spyderco Military.
Note though, that no edge will hold "forever", especially if you don't sharpen it :D
I think you'd be happy with the S30V model, the S90V is way more expensive, and is intended for people who use a knife REAL hard for a REAL long time, without an available sharpener.

Thanks friends - I certainly don't want to use a knife REAL hard for a REAL long time, so your advice about the S30V model is appreciated (the Spidey Military comes with S30V steel as standard, doesn't it?).

Welcome to BF. Save for the real thing. You might also check around the different online sellers to see if anyone has a special on Militarys or keep an eye on the F/S forum here on BF. You can almost always find what you want well below MSRP fairly quickly.

The Military is such a unique knife, I no of no substitutes. Get the real thing.

Yes, sir, it does. That said, you can still find some of the "sprint run" models with different blade steels (CPM-D2 and BG-42 as well as S90V) and handle materials/colors (foliage green G-10 on the CPM-D2 model and peel-ply carbon fiber on the BG-42 model).

You guys have been SO helpful - thanks to one and all.

I've just had a quick look around the site and I've found a Spidey Military (Black/Combo Edge) at J's Knives-N-More at a pretty good price (not sure if I should mention the price here.........).

As I'm in Australia AND I'm reluctant to part with my 'hard-earned' can anyone recommend this vendor? I hope I'm not breaching any rules by asking.

No, you're not violating any rules by asking about J's Knives-N-More, in fact, he is a Dealer member here and I've heard nothing but good things about him!

I have had an original Spyderco Military in CPM 440V (S60V) plain edge. This knife keeps a great edge. It is a great knife to use and abuse.

I would opt for the knife in S90V (CPM420V) which is vastly superior to S30V in edge holding and an improvement over the original S60V. It costs more, but you get what you pay for.

OK, so fill me in - what makes the Military such a great knife? I have a Police, which is a nice heavy duty folder. Comparing the two, what makes the Military "better" than the Police?

Just curious, here.

Andy

Andy, these are my observations comparing my Police 3 and BG42 Military, two of my favorite EDC's:

-Military has a thinner tip which pierces materials better. I have not had any durability issues with the tip, but I do not pry with folding knives.
-Lighter weight
-More comfortable handle design
-Blade profile works better slicing foods on a cutting board, something my folders frequently do
-Easier to open (Less resistance, larger opening hole)
-Higher end blade steels available, and CF handles are a nice touch
-Overall curvature of the knife, with the blade angled more downwards than the Police, is more efficient for slicing cuts in my experience

P3 has advantages over the Millie as well (4 way clip and thinner handle carries better for example) but these are the things that make my Millie see more pocket time.
