hey guys. I have a whoooole new edc coming to me for christmas this year. I have a leatherman surge (with pocket clip, bit kit & extender), streamlight micro stream & the spyderco military black on black. I'm wondering what I can expect to be able to throw at it. I currently carry a spyderco caly3 in zdp. Never used an s30v blade. What can it take, what can't it? How tough is g10 and the black coating on the blade?

I don't know about the black coating but I can say the Military is going to seem huge when it arrives. Then once you get used to it, the Caly will seem tiny and you'll wonder why you'd carry such a small knife when the Military carries so easy and seems so perfect. That's just my experience with Military's and Caly3's.

The Military is one of the best cutting knives on the market with all that belly the blade has.

I do a lot of stuff in the woods and fish a lot. Will this do well around water and slimy stuff? hows s30v hold up as far as abrasion from say, sharpening a dirty stick or cutting dirty rope? accidental sliding across a staple or something?

Yes it will be fine, just make sure you sharpen it before using it in the field to toughen up the edge.

S30V will just keep cutting and cutting. :)

The Military is my go to fishing/outdoors blade. I've cleaned tons of fish with it this summer, even hit stone with the edge and tip doing so. TINY little nicks, nothing a quick sharpening couldn't fix. Even after you think the blade feels dull, it keeps cutting. Spyderco's S30V is some great stuff. Your Military will just cut and cut and cut. Don't let all of that slicing fool you though, it still has a 4mm thick blade, and an extremely strong handle due to the nested liners. This knife feels like a feather, but performs like a tank. S30V may not be the absolute best in any one area, but it's damn good in them all.

I've never owned a coated Spyderco blade, but I believe it's DLC (diamond-like coating) and is supposed to be some of the most durable stuff out there.

It's a sharp knife. I was being dumb and playing with it and it left a huge gash on my finger. Respect.

It should take any reasonable cutting task you throw at it--the Military was designed as a heavy-duty all purpose cutting tool for soldiers, and it excels at the stuff you described, ie outdoors edc.

btw good call on the streamlight! I carry my Stylus pro everywhere I go (pretty much the same light but with 2 AAAs instead of 1). It's bright enough for pretty much any everyday task, and carries really well, so that I only notice it when I need it.

I'm getting some new sweet EDC stuff for christmas as well--a Michael walker in ZDP, Maroon FRN UKPK, and a Fenix LD10 (looking forward to trying out my first high-end LED)! Also I got a para 2 and sage 3 coming, hopefully around christmas.

sweet. I have two mini mags with terralux tle-5ex dropins for my bright (but not egg cooking) lights, very bright and good on batteries. Have fun with the new toys!

I'm not trying to be a smartass at all, I just want to clarify. DLC stands for diamond like carbon, not coating. Cheers. :)

Still armhair shaving sharp after I finished this. This was a dirty branch when I started.

Anybody have an issues with chipping? I've heard S30V was designed for knife use, and have read up on it, a whiiiiiiiiiiile back, but i don't know in use how it does. Also, what are G10's limitations?

I have done a lot of cutting with S30V and never had it chip on me yet.

And i hear ease of sharpening is a strong point. I just ordered a new sharpmaker. I dropped two rods (oops) from my old set (7+ years old im guessing) on the floor and they cracked. So the remaining two will either be designated to kitchen duty or go in my pack for when im in the woods. Normally with a woods knife i'll use it to clear small pricker vines, clean off small branches, whittle notches or points in sticks, cut rope, maybe fishing line when i'm fishing (may hit a snap or hook once in a while), sometimes to cut bottles, paper, maybe debark a stick. Normal stuff like that. My fixed blade is up to that stuff, but it would be sweet if i could pack the military for all that. I don't baton much, but it may split a stick or two for a fire.

The black DLC coating holds up quite well. I've cut a lot of cardboard with my black pe Millie and the black has just got a little more shinny with no wear at all. I would say it would take years to actually wear through it.

G10 will probably hold up against anything short of a nuclear blast. :)

I had an interesting experience with my Military. I was out for a walk one night and got brushed by a low-hanging branch. Took out the Military and slashed the end off the branch, DID NOT NOTICE the metal sign post right past it. The edge clanged off the post.

When I got it home all I saw was a slight roll, no chip, steeled it right out. S30V is good steel. Spyderco heat treats it right. There is a reason the Military is a flagship model.

Well, if that didn't convince me, i don't know another story that would! Wow. Sounds like i have nothing to worry about then. does g10 chip, crack or bend and snap?

I do believe that Spyderco's G10 is the best handle material out there, they have to pay a premium for the extra glass fiber composition (I think Sal mentioned some 30% more that other companies' recipes) but it's really worth it

I also agree with Esav that Micarta attended some Careers Day where G10 did the teaching :)

Spyderco knows what they are doing with S30V and G10.
