spyderco military

Micarta, of course, is a generation (or two) earlier, but G10 is the game to beat. Even carbon fiber (IMO) offers no real advantage and a slight disadvantage for knife scales. It is considerably more expensive, it requires more care when cutting/shaping, and it is more likely to get ugly where holes are made for screws or pins. The weight advantage is essentially non-existent for the sizes we're talking about on knives.

Not in recorded history. :p

Seriously, it is about as inert and tough a handle material as you can get. G-10 is what Micarta wants to be when it grows up.

The black coating is very tough. I used my black blade Para SE to cut 14/3 copper wire. It left trace marks of copper on the coating that eventually rubbed out but it did not scratch at all. Cutting thru a material on the ground and hitting the rocks underneath is probably the only thing that has scratched my DLC coated blades.

G-10 is tough as well. I've had my SNG fall out of my lap a few times when I get out of my truck and hit the concrete. The gunner grip SnG's have a very thin G-10 scale and mine fell right on the lanyard hole corner and also the sharp tip on the back where the scale jimping and spine jimping line up. No cracks or chips but the impacted areas turned a lighter color I guess from being scratched.

I've chipped all of my S30V factory edges around the first inch of the tip. More from non-cutting tasks but after re-sharpening I haven't had any chips in any of my S30V Spydercos.

I've used my Military for over a year at work and it has never let me down on any type of cutting task. Holds a great working edge for a long time. It's a large folder but carries very easily, flat, lightweight. My favorite knife ever.

You guys have hit signs and cut wire!? Did you hit the sign on the corner esav, or did it slide across the face of it? And twid, is that the roughest thing you've done to it?

Like just about any coating, it will show some wear over time. But it is very durable, and pretty much the opposite of Cold Steel's teflon coating which rubs off on the first usage.

I think used blades look better than new ones, so I like the look of this one just fine. But its the cutting that really matters.

Military. But you knew that. :)

Here's some black coating with less mileage, but still a little wear:

I didn't hit the sign. I hit the metal post, edge on. [wince]
Oh jeeze. That makes me cringe lol. I cringe when a knife slides across a fishing hook or hits a staple or something, but a swing into a sign. You ought to resign from here and sell all your knives! Abuse is not tolerated. I am dying for this knife, along with my leatherman surge now. Should be an awesome EDC. Anyone else care to throw some photos in? My girlfriend said she liked the black on black, i was undecided between black/black and camo/black, i figured the black (g10) would look better in the longrun.

great emergency food prep knife, too. Slices like a dream, and being 4 inches helps, though longer would be ideal.

Was at my mom's last night, she couldn't find her pineapple peeling/coring thing. And tried to cut it with a dull kitchen knife to no avail. I whipped out my CPM M4 Millie and literally just push cut straight through the outer shell from top to bottom with very little resistance. My sister went WOAH. So I let her finish the pineapple up and after her first slice she just went THAT... IS... COOL...

Always funny when someone handles a truly sharp knife for the first time.

I do believe that Spyderco's G10 is the best handle material out there, they have to pay a premium for the extra glass fiber composition (I think Sal mentioned some 30% more that other companies' recipes) but it's really worth it

I also agree with Esav that Micarta attended some Careers Day where G10 did the teaching :)

Does anyone have a link where Sal has talked about increased glass content of G10? I can see 30% more in FRN but not G10. Having made home made 'micarta' I just can't see adding much more than an extra sheet for a given final thickness of G10 and I also don't think it would make much difference in the strength of the material.
