I recieved my new Spyderco Mouse today in the Mail and thought I'd do a purely subjective, short, looking/handling-only review, I wont be testing which one can hold x amount of weight before breaking or cutting polebarn nails in half with them so take it with a grain-o-salt!
Anyways here it is:
Price...
Navigator $29.99
Mouse $39.99
Mouse wins simply because It was a better deal compared to MSRP
The Mouse was packaged in a plain white box...I thought it would have the nice graphics like the Navigator came in. It doesnt matter but, seemed chintzy for a $100 or so MSRP knife.
The Mouse has a better attention to fit and finish. The Navigator had a few scuffs, dings etc, along with more blade play vertically and side to side. Mouse wins here.
Build/strength of the Mouse appears to be quite a bit better on the Mouse as it is thicker and uses larger rivots throughout. It also has a huge pivot pin that is adjustable. Big win for the Mouse here.
Blade, they are the same material with the same grind and roughly the same length, the Mouse's is substantially thicker and has a perfect thumbramp grip...good for strength, maybe worse for slicing.... I guess its a tie here.
Handle. this one is a little tricky...I love the handle on the Navigator as it allows all four fingers a place to rest and looks completely unique, has a few peaks here and there that could be rounded more, but still is great. The Mouse has smoother contours and thickness which i like, but only really allows 3 finger handling for me, although the extra thickness seems to allow for a awesome grip. I guess it's another tie.
Ease of opening, another close call, they both are very easy but I tend to think the Navigator is a tad easier with the entire opening hole exposed and larger handle. Navigator wins here, barely though.
Looks... I like the Navigator here it just looks like a piece of jewelry compared to the purpose built looks of the Mouse. I love the greenish handles against the nicely finished VG-10 on the Navigator.
Bottom line, I like them both so much I would hate to pick a clear winner, but, If I had ONE small folder, of any I have ever seen, for outdoor survival scenarios, it would be the Mouse no doubt.
I was going to ditch the loser of this comparison, but have found more reason to keep both! dam thats beginning to be a common theme lately!
