Spyderco Mule Team Details:

We would like to get a count on how many of our Steel Junkies would like to participate in the Mule Team. For those of you, who are not aware of this project, please see this thread… http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=445613

Quantity:
We will produce 3-4 variations per year, each of course being different steel.

Pricing:
Pricing will be a Net Price only; there will be no additional discounts for Dealers/Distributors. This program is to introduce different steels to our ELUs at an affordable price.

Each variation will be priced accordingly with the only variable effecting price being the steel. The price will be announced prior to the release of the upcoming model.

Commitment:
We would like to know the depth of your interest. Would you like to sign up for the whole series or sign up for each model as they are announced? Keep in mind that signing up for models individually would create the possibility that a steel could be dropped if there was not enough participation.

Purchasing:
All purchases will be handled through Spyderco Factory Outlet (SFO). This will insure that we are able to offer the lowest price possible for each model.

Shipping Fees:
  • Domestic orders will ship free of charge (as per our standard shipping from SFO)
  • International orders will be charged $25.00 for shipping.
Collectors:
Collectors will have an opportunity to enroll under the same provisions (e.g. Net Price, Purchased from SFO, Appropriate Shipping fees, etc.).

Sign-up:
We will announce the method for signing up soon. Our goal is to allow you to sign up and provide your payment information through our site in a secure format.

Now:
What we need now is to find out how many of you are actually interested in signing up. If you are interested, please email the following to MuleTeam@spyderco.com.
  • Name & Screen Name
  • Contact Information (Address/Phone/Email)
  • Commitment (Series sign-up or Individual)
Do not include any payment information; we will let you know when to submit that and how.

Can the first item be an "Individual signup" followed by a "series" commitment after receiving the first?

I'm guessing, and hoping that I'm wrong, that there won't be enough folks interested in the full series to make the project fly by itself. If this does indeed happen, I'd still love to be able to sign up for the series, kind of a fire and forget deal.

I'm in for 52100 and Pendray-made wootz! If you go with some wootz made by Furrer, Obach, and Wurtz, I'm in for those, too!

I can think of at least 10 steels I'd gaurantee to buy. 52100 is a great start. Hopefullly every buy won't have to be too large like the 52100 buy because that itself could derail this project. Joe

I have a feeling that not everyone will want one in every steel, but that of course depends on which steels end up being chosen. It would be best to first do the steels that people show the most interest in trying, to ensure the maximum number of buyers. Once there is a large enough email list, maybe a polling of everyone's votes for their favorite steels would be feasible.

Here's my idea of how it could be done: Post a list of the steels which people have shown interest in, but limit it to the steels for which the producer/ manufacturer has shown an interest in participating in this project. Have everyone pick their top 5 (or 6 or 7), voting 5 points to their first pick, 4 points to their second pick, 3 points to their 3rd pick, etc. That way the steels to get the most points should be the ones people have most interest in....

hmm, I wonder if anyone is actually going to use them as knives, or maybe just limited edition Rc 62 beanie babies.

Well, I just bought one as they appear to be back up on the site. Don't worry, mine will get to cut up plenty of things to keep it happy.

This one is definitely going to be shredding some cardboard for me. Now I just need to figure out how to make sheaths...

I would hope they get used. That is the purpose and "spirit" of the project.

This is the testing and review section,. isn't it?

Sal,

I'll use the heck out of it, but why is 52100 the first steel for a mule?

Fine steel, lousy corrosion resistance.

Best Regards,
