Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight - surprised me (PICS)

I've always liked the original Native in FRN with the barrel clip. I didn't like the Native 4 or 5 because the cutting edge was shorter than all of the previous Natives. That changed yesterday. I walked into a Fin Feather Fur Outfitters that is close to me and took a look. I stop there about 4 times a year to see if they have any new knives. They had a Native 5 Lightweight. I asked to see it and after holding it and opening and closing it....I said "I'll take it". I paid about $30 more than I should have but I wanted to take that model home, and I appreciated the fact that they have a storefront for me to visit and they have a bunch of knives. I will gladly pay more at a brick and mortar store.

Anyway, I love it. I previously didn't want it due to the squared off handles, and the shorter blade. I changed my mind. It is a much better Native than the previous generations. Thanks Spyderco. Well done. This Native is a butt kicker.

I will however be sending the clip out to be Cerakoted black.

It has officially been 10 years that I've been into Spyderco knives. I'm still going hard and have no intention of stopping. :)

My only gripe was also with the edge length. A 3" blade with a cutting edge less than 2.5" is... less than desirable... to be polite about it. But, I traded into a CF & S110V N5 recently that's gonna live here with me permanently. I'll forgo my edge length issue to carry that one. I really love backlocks and Spyderco does them as well as or better than anyone else I know about. It's also a very "friendly looking" knife when used in "hostile" territory.

I have both the FRN and G-10 versions in S35VN. They really are something special. I don't usually go for FRN, but I was surprised by the N5 LW. It's now my work knife.

Great knife! The only thing I noticed is that the N5 ltwt is stiff compared to the pink Native I gave my wife.

Hi David,

Thanx much for the kind words and nice pics. We think it's a nice piece and we're pleased to be able to offer it.

Dale, I agree with your assessment on the blade. I do like to have at the very least a 3" cutting edge. The first time I tried the knife, it felt as if it was made for my hand (everyone says that). That is a testament to how good the ergonomics are. I do like that the over all foot print when closed is small, so the knife can be carried IWB without any hang ups.

Nice pictures, David! I like the "5" better than all of the others.

Thanks Roger. Good to see ya buddy.

The newer Natives have definitely grabbed my attention. I've always been a G10 guy but this FRN version looks to be really sweet.

Well said. I was holding my breath to see if Spyderco would drop it in S110V, bu the more I thought about it the more I realized S35VN is more than enough for my needs. Now I'm just waiting for some different colored FRN to hit.

you couldn't go vary bad with ether version of this knife!i own both, and are vary well made and the lock-up is solid as a rock.

The green Forum Native 5 has really grown on me, and I'm tempted to try out a LW SE... Its not often that you see a FFG full SE with a PE tip in a new production Spydie...
