Spyderco Native 5 Lightweight - surprised me (PICS)

I'd definitely love a wire clip on this - and just about every Spyderco for that matter.

I am currently trying to find a place to send the clip to be cerakoted.....or find a way to subdue the clip in some way. A wire clip would be great.

I have few natives, but bought N5 LW out of curiocity. It is very nice, but will not replace my Forum Native5. Weight is not a concern for me at this time. And dark green S110V Native is near perfect knife for me.
I'm still curious why this didn't get the wire clip like the Manix 2 LW?
I also would love to see low riding wire clip on Native5, but it looks like that Spyderco prefer 4 way clip.

Thanks for the review and great pics. I've got one on the way and this makes it more enticing.

I called the SFO and asked if I could get a black clip for the Native 5. The nice lady told me that they will be available when the black blade version comes out. I'll just wait and get one. :) I hate polished clips.

David,

Suggestions: take the clip out, burn it over stove till orange, dunk in water. You'll have dark matte clip. Don't forget to do the same for the screw heads.

I've done the same to my Cara Cara 2, Resilience and others. No ill effects. You can google YT name arsonhammock, he showed how it's done.

I've done that with a MAPP gas torch but I wondered if the clips are heat treated in some way to get their "springiness". I don't want to ruin that. When I did it with a torch I just let it air cool. Does the dunking in water help keep it springy?

I didn't really compare before and after, but they still work well. Just from my limited experience on China made Spydies, and some SRM/Enlans. Yours is made in US if not mistaken, so I can't be sure.

Edit to add, seems he didn't dunk it in water.

Can the two slots/indentations for the wire clip be somehow melted or machined into the FRN. I would take advantage of the lanyard hole and stick (gorilla glue) a nut inside the diameter of the lanyard hole and use a screw to hold the clip down.

I think Spyderco's philosophy on the FRN Native is that it's the American-made "Working Man's" knife. Relatively inexpensive, good materials, sturdy, etc. The newer clip pattern follows that with it's wider base for a more rigid mount resistant to bending, etc. I think alot of afis like the wire clip but it's probably considered cheap looking to a non afi. I personally would prefer the wire clip as well but I get why didn't use it.

Yeah, I can see that... but from that perspective it made no sense to abandon the 3 bolt clip on the Manix 2 and go with a wire clip for the lightweight.
Either way I'm happy though, was just wondering.

Still carrying this almost daily and love it. I feel like the CPM-S35VN is every bit as good or better than CPM-S30V. So far so good.
