I recently bought native 5 on ebay and first thing I noticed that it doesn't open as easy as for example Manix 2. The second that there is no like metal frame under the g10. Is it some early production of the knife or fake?

Thanks!

In general, lockback/midlock Spyderco’s are going to have more opening resistance than just about any other Spyderco. They may feel a little grittier and require more of a break in as well.

Did you buy a Native Lightweight or Native G10? The G10 models just switched to having no liners. The Native 5 LW have never had liners im pretty sure

Sorry I haven't figured out how to add a picture to the post but the picture of the knife is here https://www.flickr.com/photos/140440726@N04/shares/778g63
Looks like you bought the exclusive Green G10 version, that does not have liners. (actually it's hard to tell, is the Native green? If not, it might be a newer black version without liners).

If you want liners you'll have to get an old version Native 5 black G-10 with S30V or the S110V blurple G-10 version. Sal said all new versions of the Native 5 G-10 will be linerless.

The Spyderco backlocks are going to be stiff at first. That lockbar has keeps constant pressure on the tang of the blade until it's locked open. The Manix 2 backlock I had, had a back spring like a bear trap. I like the stronger springs, as they result in a more solid lockup. If you're looking for flickability, then you probably won't like the linerless backlock models. If you don't mind your thumb in the hole throughout the whole opening cycle or a super solid lockup, then the backlock models will be perfect!

It's black CPM S35VN steel. Thanks.

I actually like the stiff lock. I have Manix 2 but afraid to carry it in California because it can be open easily with the flip of the hand.

Well, that's not the Lil Native. Looks like the newer linerless Native 5. They are plenty strong if they are anything like the Manix 2 backlock.

I'm a tinkerer, so I would take it apart and polish the tang of the blade on a strop. This will help significantly in the smoothness department. That is, if you can get past dis-assembling your own knife, which Spyderco advises against. Or, you could just use it and it will wear in over time.

I think I was going to buy that particular knife. Wasn’t it like 90 bucks? Great deal! It’s the new CQI’d linerless g10. They are all made that way now. They are also eliminating s35vn altogether. I wanted it because it still has the s35vn and not S30v that they are switching over to. Will be a cool piece to have in a few years.

Give it some oil on the sides of the lock bar between it and the scales. If you open the knife halfway it will stick up and allow you to do this. Then just work the lockbar a bunch and it should smooth out.

The native is my favorite knife and I’ve had to do this to darn near all of them out of the box

When I had a Native 5, oil and hundreds of repeated openings made it very smooth to open and close. For a long time I was interested in finding just what you have: the linerless G10 version in S35VN. I never did and eventually moved on. I don’t think it needs the liners, and without them it’s very lightweight. Congratulations on a great knife.

Yes it was the only new native g10 < $100 on ebay few days ago. Thanks for advice.

Thank you JimMD, may I know what knife did you buy instead of Native 5?

Ended up with the Chaparral CF/G-10 in the short run and later was lucky enough to get a SpydieChef at a good price. After those, it was harder to justify a Native 5, but I may still get one some day.

Two great knives. One reason to add a Native 5 would be the steel options. I have a Maxamet.
