Spyderco Native Plain Edge - you like?

I was wondering...what's the difference between the III and IV ?
Do both have FRN handle and S30V steel blade ? Made in Golden , US ?
Do both have steel liners or none of them ??

The "4" is the latest refinement of the pattern. It has minor changes to the pattern as well as a full flat grind, carbon fiber scales, skeletonized full liners and a 4 way clip.

We wanted to test the refinements before we began tooling for a new USA FRN Native4.

The new version will be made just like the Endura4.

I'll be on the look for the Manix.

The only other real bargain S30V knife is, of course, the Buck Alaskan 110. I sure wish Buck would offer competitors with modern knives, but they don't. Now that Wal*Mart no longer carries the Native, where's the best place to get them now? I'd sure love to have a black version plain and a black version serrated.

oh wow, i cant wait for the frn native 4, that sounds fantastic!

the frn native 1 is one of my favorite knives.

woot! FRN Native 4, like the Endura type handles. Sweet. USA S30V, and If it's at the same price point as the Previous FRN Native... I'm In!

I like them both and have had them both in serrated and PE; a great all around EDC:thumbup:!

I did a torture test of the Native some time ago...I took it to the Bahamas with me as my EDC and wore it snorkeling, every day in the pool and ocean, and kept it on my person 16 hours a day for a week with no cleaning to see how it would hold up to corrosion. It slightly rusted in just a few spots but otherwise held up like a champ.

Then I used the blade to cut conduit wire and remove the burrs from conduit when I installed some electric fixtures around my garage. Again, happy with the results...it kept an edge with the abuse, and I had a single small chip in the blade from the conduit trimming.

It's still in my stable of hard use knives. And yes, you can get one spooky sharp.

Thank you Sal !
So basically ...the new FRN IV will be pretty much like the 3-rd generation...

Always wanted to like one, but that second point on the bottom just hits my fingers the wrong way.

Haven't checked the forum for over a week and I just had to respond to this thread. A Native (I've got 3 of them) has been my favorite edc for a while. It's not the most expensive or the biggest but it gets the most use. A great knife that fits great in the hand and won't empty the wallet.

I never thought I'd like a Spydie - they have holes in their blades! Of course, then, two years ago this summer, I looked a Native over at WallyWorld. My wife saw me - heard me telling a friend about it. She had to meet her mom back at WallyWorld that evening. When she returned, she handed me that boxed knife - super! By my July birthday last summer, they were gone at all the local stores - she had bought me a second one! Too good of a bargain, dropping WallyWorld was Spyderco's decision. It really is a $75+ knife.

The first thing I did was, like all of my new knives, put the clip back in the box. It is a natural accompaniment to my pocket change and Jeep keys. I've opened many a blister pack, cardboard box, and even mail with it. Probably every new knife I've ordered in the last 1.5+ years has had it's package/mailer opened by the Native. All have gone in my back pocket - that Native has the front pocket position secured. Great hand fit - very safe choil for getting 'close'.

I did re-edge it - once - last summer - after it was warm from cutting down a huge cardboard box. I used a regular Spydie #204 'Sharpmaker' - the very best expenditure one can make of $50 if you have a few knives. The other new Native was A-B-ed with the old one as I sharpened it - they both have the same shaver capability. It's a bargain at twice the WallyWorld price.

Stainz

PS Love my Buck 110s - especially the custom ones. They are definite back pocket carries, however.

I'd like to see a new U.S made Native with the following specs:

- CPM-154 instead of S30V
- G10 instead of FRN
- Ball lock
- 4 inch blade
- More handle color options

Gee thanks guys. I was done buying knives for awhile but all that, and les than $40 bucks at Wally World. I heading there now.

I love my Native also but I messed mine up. It had some side to side blade play and like a nut I thought I could fix it myself. I just barely tapped the pin with a hammer hoping to tighten it up and get rid of the side to side play and now the blade is stiff to open. It dont have no side to side wiggle anymore but its just stiff to open. I cant hardly open it with one hand now. So its put away and I am carrying my Kershaw Vapor. Hey I like the Vapor but I really loved my Native and I just dont have the money to buy another one. Now I am carrying my Vapor and a SAK with me, but the Native matched up with one of my SAKs was my carry of choice.

You or someone else can probably fix that. You might want to ask in the 'Tinkering' forum to get some responses. You could wrap the blade in a cloth and put it in a vise and lightly grip the entire blade with the jaws and then put a little side to side pressure on the handle to 'pry' apart the handle slabs.

Or a large flat bladed screwdriver placed inside the handle as close to the pivot with a twisting action might spread it apart. You may risk marring the FRN this route. But I'm sure it can be fixed instead of considering it a loss.

Just a thought!

I think you've just described my perfect knife. ;-)

The size, shape, and look of the Native 4 is just amazing. It's everything good about the previous Natives, only with more awesomeness.

And I like a knife I'm not afraid to abuse, and FRN works beautifully for that.
