I'm thinking about a Spyderco Native, but I don't see it mentioned much. Any input as to why its good or not good? I know I can get it in VG10 or S30V.

In my opinion, the Native is currently the best value on the market when it comes to an American made folder with premium blade steel. I have one of the very first S30V models to hit the market and have used the snot out of it. Very good work knife. It feels much more solid than the other FRN Spydies. The ergonomics are just right. The blade is super simple to keep sharp with the Sharpmaker. I suppose the reason you don't hear much about the Native is because it's an "old standby" and not a hot new offering.

I'd stay away from the Native III (the VG-10 version) unless you can handle it before purchase. They are notorious for tight pivots, something that's supposed to be fixed in the next batch. One of my co-workers has a Native III and he doesn't mind the tight pivot. Subjective, I guess. He really likes the wire clip too.

Don't overlook the newest version of the American made Native, the DLC coated black blade. Limited production and (so far) only available serrated.

The native is a very nice FRN handle folder, but unlike Harry, I think the VG-10 Native III is better than the S30V Native (but it is made in Japan).

Both models are better than the vast majority of folders being made.

Great utility knife for a great price. Perfect beater with great steel. I have a hard time sharpening it though.

The Native VG 10 was on my short list a few months ago. I ended up with enough money to buy a Small Wood Sebenza, so I did. I really like the shape of it.

I've had three pass through my hand and currently have an S30V PE model.

I really like the deep choil design on this knife.

I wish I hadn't lost the one I had in Gin 1. That version was no doubt my favourite.

I've gone through a lot of edc knives and the one that I always go back to is my old Spyderco Native. Great ergonomics, great steel, and a reasonable price. Get one, you won't be disappointed.

I have a 1st. Generation Native and I like it. It's a good sized, solid folder and, IMHO, great value for money. Obviously something like looks is very subjective but I happen to think it's one of the best looking Spydercos.

What he said......plus

I like the Native III in VG10 better than the S30V version. Why?

+Better ergos - a real fistfull for a small knife
+VG10 can be got stupidly sharp very easily
+Wire clip is an improvement, should be on more spydies IMHO
+thicker FRN scales seem to make it more solid, with tighter lockup (than the one regular Native I had anyway)
+Primitive caveman looks - you would have seen these clipped to loincloths a few million years ago for sure. :)

I have the S30V one. Very Nice. Not my favorite EDC, cos I now have a Ritter Mini .. but a very nice small EDC all the same.

take the S30v! I guess its the cheapest knive with this steel currently availaible on the market...

I like the ergo's of the Native III. Mine, unfortunately has the afore mentioned ludicriously tight pivot. :grumpy:

I have both the Native II (stainless handle, AUS 10 blade) and the III. I'm not real fond of the II due to a combination of a slick handle and a tight pivot which essentially makes it a two hand opener--I might give this knife away since I don't use it much. I really like the III, however. The handle is a bit thick but it gives a good gripping surface to hold onto. I'm seriously considering getting the S30V version. I really like the spear point blades.

I owned both the Native and Native III, and did not care for the slim handle of the Native. I bought a PE Native, and the blade dulled pretty fast. I didn't even use it that much, maybe light work once or twice. Bought the Native III, SE, and it has been my EDC ever since. Great feel to it, I used it outside all day long recently, and my hands never got tired. Probably one of my favorite knives, and for the price, you should definitely get one.

Having said the above about the Native, I am looking to buy one of the black bladed SE Natives. Anybody know if they are bulk packed like the Native, or come in a box?

I have one of the 1st Generation Native knives. It's a good knife for the money, but I do like the Endura/Delica knives better.

I picked a Native up thinking it was going to replace my Endura in both feel, funtion, and steel. Sadly I was wrong. I hated the way it felt in my hand. While the slim profile did fit better in my pocket, it did not fit my large hands well.

The S30V steel was very impressive. And aside from the pivot being pretty tight, tighter than I liked, it seemed like a very solid knife for the the price I paid.

I have since traded it to JS Spydo for a Native III and and very happy. the ergos are far more comfortable for me and the pivot seems much smoother.

If you have large hands I'd say go with the Native III. If you want a knife to see what S30V is like, the Native will serve you well as long as it fits you.

Either are a testimate to Spydercos great quality knives. :D

I couldn't decide so I went with the Native in VG-10 and a Para-Military with black S30V :D
