Spyderco Navaja

Spyderco knives are often perceived as "fugly" and "Love at first sight" is a rare experience with our designs. However, useage and performance demonstrates function better than the eye.

The "ethnic series" has been created to try to bring to the knife "afi" a traditional design from different parts of the world and blend those design features into a modern folding knife.

I like it. Detractors may be right when they say it's ugly, but if so, it's ugly like a bulldog ,which is still very attractive. Another thing I like about is that it's almost 4" long. I find most Spyderco folders are too small for my taste.
Speaking of big folders; I'm still waiting for the Szabo folder, which I read was supposed to be somewhere between 4 and 5 inches long. Now with the black Warrior coming out, [I've got the other Warrior which is excellent] might we one day see a folding Warrior? If so ,please don't make it less than 4" long Sal !!

Hi Larry,

Szabo's in-the-works. I've got one of Bob Taylor's folding Hobbit's on my desk. ;)

I dunno, Sal... I'm totally digging your "ethnic" series. So far, I've got a Mini-Persian and a Zulu. A Chokwe is on the way as I type. As soon as I saw the Navaja in the new catalog, it went on my MUST HAVE list.

I'm also a person that digs "form follows function." Accordingly, I like a lot (most) of your traditional designs, as well. No other knife line / brand appeals to me. I'm hooked on the Spydies. :)

I really like this Navaja, but I have a hangup on the Taiwan thing. I don't have a problem with Japan, because it seems to me like the purpose of Japan production is the VG10 and the different production scale. Without having any actual information, it seems to me like Taiwan production is just to get lower labor costs. Maybe I'm mistaken. I'd like to be mistaken because I'd like to buy the knife.

Luckily for you, we are on a forum with an excellent "search" feature.

Luckily for you, we are on a forum with an excellent "search" feature.

Sadly for me, there are people on the forum who rather feel clever by telling others to use the search function than simply exerting the same amount of effort to summarize the answer.

A search for "spyderco taiwan" returned 289 threads. At first glance, none make it immediately apparent that they provide the actual reasons for going to Taiwan.

289 relevant threads is not enough for you? IF you wish to save time, you could, of course, search for Mr. Glesser's posts that have "taiwan" in them...

But if you can't, I'll help you out:

Yay, starting off the New Year by finding someone who responds constructively to my snarkiness!

Now I have to buy one.
I thank you.
My wallet curses you.

and you've done an amazing job Sal. I've thought about what a cool idea the ethnic line is ever since I picked up my Barong and have found myself anticipating the newest releases. Now that a few have appeared I have to choose which ones I want.

I don't have one like that so I guess I NEED it. Like the idea of the liner lock and adjustable pivot. Unlike Schumpp Persian (lockback) which was difficult to open and no adjustments this should be more user friendly. The Persian was one of my favorites but let it go due to the stiffness opening the blade.
